Draco suffers from nightmares. I’ve witnessed him thrashing about in his sleep and breaking out into a cold sweat. I try and comfort him but he’s a heavy sleeper and doesn’t usually notice. He laughs it off in the morning and tells me only fools suffer from nightmares. He’s so convincing he fools himself but I’ve seen the way his face screws up in fear and I’ve heard the soft cries of father.
My life has been a public spectacle for all to see and yet there is so much I don’t know about him. And when I ask even the trivial of questions regarding his family history or upbringing he clams up and turns to stone.
So I pretend I can’t hear his breathy moans of anguish when he whimpers in his sleep. And when tears trickle silently down his cheeks, I wipe them away with my thumb. His eyes are dry by morning and he’s none the wiser. But I never get through the day without thinking back to the previous night and neither, I suspect, does he.
