[ACTION POST, MMKAY]

[It's awful late. Cat should be asleep, but sleep has been hard of late, with worry spiraling around in his head, curling in his stomach and sitting there, steadfast. He tries to make himself sleep, like a spell, but it doesn't work, not really. He thinks maybe he got it wrong last night, because he'd had cramps for the next ( Read more... )

[Syaoran goes for walks a lot. Generally during the day, but there isn't much that can scare a boy with his own sword and a bit of magic, even in this City. In any case, he had long become used to nocturnal wandering at home, chasing cards and strange presences.]

[He is rather surprised to see another kid wandering around after dark, though. His curiousity leads him to approach. Oh, it was the boy with the gingerbread, from the other day.]

Um. Hello?

[He's surprised too, of course. It's not that he hadn't expected to see other people (all right, maybe he hadn't), but he absolutely hadn't expected to be addressed, and by another child, no less.]

[He jumps, eyes wide and frightened for half a second.]

W-- Oh. Hello.

Are you all right?

[Syaoran hadn't intended to startle the other boy. He just walked quietly. He tried to look non-threatening.]

Yes, I'm fine.

[It's a lie, of course, but he's gotten good at it. He wonder if that's a bad thing, if that's one of the first steps to becoming an evil enchanter. Lying, and it not being very hard.]

I thought... it was nice out.

[Lucy spotted his blond head - it's hard not to, and she steps slowly as to not surprise him]

Excuse me? Cat?

[Not surprised this time, or not into jumping, anyway. It's a familiar voice he turns to]

Lucy? Hello.

Hullo. Are you all right?

[Cuddy has had trouble sleeping herself. She's finally accepted that this is reality and not a drug-induced hallucination, and between the resulting panic & vague sense that she made an ass of herself when she first arrived, she's had quite a few restless nights.

She catches sight of Cat and frowns. This world may not be like any she's ever known, but she still doesn't think a child should be out wandering alone at night. She approaches him cautiously.]

Hi there.

[This was more expected, at least. At this time, Cat's found a bench and is inspecting the sky. He doesn't really remember how the constellations go in his world, perhaps how they look when all connected. They must be different here. Does the sky change every night?

He looks down as the woman approaches. Her voice sounds familiar; after a moment comprehension dawns. The loud one.]

Hello.

You probably shouldn't be out this late at night. Do your parents know you're here?

[She feels awkward, like a puppet in the hands of an unexperienced master. Should she be more insistent that he go home? Less? Is she coming off as an unsavory character? How much danger is he really in here? How do parents manage to make this look so natural?]

[He understands that she's just arrived, so of course she wouldn't know that the logical assumption is that his parents haven't come along. He wonders, absently, how he would feel if they did come. Since, apparently, the dead do.]

No. They aren't here, but those I live with don't, either.

[Hello, dog! Cat couldn't be startled by it, since they made plenty of noise on the way over. He laughs, despite his mood, and scratches behind Biscuit's ears.

He looks up at Angela, fighting off a trace of guilt, and also irritation - it's because he's young that she asks. He skirts the question.]

Hello, Angela. This is Biscuit, right? Hello, Biscuit.

[Cat's never had a dog, or even been much around them. He discovers that he's a fan of them, perhaps more so than cats, and falls to a knee to have better access to the belly. He's focused on this, so is slow to frown at that statement. For someone his age.]

I only wanted a walk. ... I'm all right.

For as often as they can be careless and remiss, just as often Christopher and Millie are very thorough. Setting strings of spells on their flatmates and each other isn't a violation of privacy to either of them; it's a precaution in the City, and a precaution back home, as well.

So when Cat slips out at night, a niggling buzz in Millie's mind wakens her. The part of her mind that she sets aside to keep track of the others is sensitive, like a loose, sore tooth, and when she examines it, she realizes Cat is no longer in his room--nor is he in the building, either. Millie clucks and climbs out of bed, her hair swinging in a braid over her shoulder, and pulls on her dressing gown. She's worried, but not frantic with it, so she's calm when she casts her mind out to search for him, and isn't surprised to find him in the stables.

She teleports there, taking care to arrive outside so as not to startle Syracuse, and creeps in through the creaking door. "Cat?" she whispers, then raises her voice, feeling silly--it's late, yes, but this is a ( ... )

In the end, Cat had gone back to the stables. He would return to the apartment, he would, but for now, even if Syracuse was sleeping, he felt better to be by him. Actually going into the stall would have been pointless and cramped, not to mention dirty, but he could sit against the door, listening to Syracuse breathe, and his tail swishing through the air ( ... )

Cat is different from most children, and many would probably find it difficult reading the play of emotions in his features and voice, but he's so small and quiet and mute-looking that Millie can't help but pay extra special attention to him. He's an enchanter, a nine-lifer, and even more powerful than herself, so Millie knows he can look after himself. But Millie can't help wanting to care for him. She remembers what Christopher told her he knew of Cat, that he's apparently Cat's guardian in time, and that makes Millie wonder where Cat's parents are. Caroline's only about her own age, but if she had a child, Millie knows Christopher's cousin would never just give him up. Millie never had a mother herself, but at least she had Mother Proudfoot and her priestesses.

And besides, Cat is Christopher's cousin, and there's that whole honour thing that means she needs help him and his.

When she approaches Cat, though, she's smiling hesitantly. He can't like being fussed over and guarded carefully because of his age--she remembers herself ( ... )

If it weren't Millie, Cat might have felt cornered. He's annoyed with himself for not having noticed the spells, or his tripping them, for having woken Millie. Hopefully only Millie. As it's well too late now to do much about it, he doesn't linger on it. There's too much else to think about besides, without that topping it ( ... )
