They're concentrating so much on themselves and what they're trying to achieve that they slip away from each other, using drugs to cope and keep themselves going they isolate themselves more, their lives running in broken parralell until the last scene where they all curl up similarly but alone.
I generally find that film needs a Unicorn chaser, so here you go
