Title: Thermos
Summary: In "Change of Heart" - Barney threatens Ted with the story of "The Thermos". This is my take on what that might be. Set around the time of The Goat.
Rating/Warnings: PG-15 for sexual situations - racy but nothing too explicit.

Awww... I LOVED THIS!!
Oh Ted Ted Ted... that was soo... so mean! And Barney was TOTALLY the bigger person here. The PAIN, and then the ultimate and fast forgiveness, because he's Barney, and he can't afford to lose Ted ever ever ever... arghf!

Between this and dreamofspike's Consequences, I'm gonna start watching the show thinking Ted's meant to have this masochistic streak in him... :P

*And can I say that Barney, in his bruised post-bus-accident state, was mentally way hot in my head... Dear me, I think I've inherited some Robin... XD*

Thank you! Ted definitely was mean, but then he spazzed out majorly over Barney's betrayal, over-reacted in a pretty extreme way, so I think it's pretty realistic.

And to a certain extent this helps with the crushing guilt Barney felt because he knows that Ted's just as bad as him! I wish I could do a Barney-POV of this story actually. But I think it would be pretty short.

(Barney IS way hot with the bruises!)

That's true, Ted was very very mean in The Goat and afterwards. :( I think the fact that he was TOTALLY fine with Robin made it worse, because then he was just targeting Barney to attack because he can. I think he knew deep down that Barney had no one else, whereas Robin would've probably managed to find other friends and left him forever ( ... )

Yes, I think in this story I wanted to show that Ted felt his friends (Robin/Lily/Marshall) didn't actually approve of him dumping Barney like that. Because we know that Robin still hung out with him, and Marshall tried to help Barney when he found out. I like to think that Ted WAS alienated.

But yes, absolutely, Barney didn't sleep with Robin because of Ted. Not at all. In fact, Ted was probably the reason Barney didn't initiate it. We all know that Robin did. SHE invited Barney back to her place, seduced him with Robin Sparkles and I bet you anything you like that she kissed him!

Grrrrr @ Ted!

But yeah, Barney's GUILT about it was pretty extreme too. So of course he'd feel that he deserved everything Ted did to punish him. He probably even thinks he deserves being hit by the bus, and that it was a small price to pay for Ted's friendship.

Is this the contraversial HIMYM fic you were talking about in your other entry? Either way, it's AMAZING! I've never read about Ted/Shannon fanfic before and this has played out really well!

I love how you combined the idea of Ted's revenge on Barney into the same story as the Thermos idea :)

Yes, this is it! I have a feeling it won't get many comments because it's not a usual pairing! But I really wanted there to be a Ted/Shannon fanfic too, because I've never read one. And it's something that sprung to mind immediately when Barney said "The Thermos". I have no idea why!

Ohhh Ted. Cold blooded! I really liked this, though. This is not a pairing I would've even thought about, but it makes sense for Ted to be so angry that he ends up lashing out and rationalizing it to himself that it's okay because Barney slept with Robin. I loved Barney's non-reaction to it, too - the way the emotions pass over his face but he doesn't say anything except to say that he and Ted are even now. I just really like seeing darker side of Ted! And I love how you wove the Thermos story in there.

Thank you! Yes, it's a really odd pairing isn't it? But I just loved the idea that Ted, in a dark moment, would do something as appalling as this.

I wish there were background fics about Lily and Robin's blackmail stories too!

I've been meaning to write Ted/Shannon for the longest time, but couldn't come up with a hook for it. Then as soon as Barney blackmailed Ted with this secret story, it all seemed to fall into place!

This was a shiny fic, hun, though I'm also a bit of a sucker for Ted's dark side. I feel like I need to go back and see the look Barney gives Ted when he says "Thermos," just because I need to incorporate Ted/Shannon into that look and make it canon.

Thanks honey. Barney's threat of the Thermos story was his third go at Ted, so you knew it had to be something REALLY bad!
