The first time I tried to read this one, something about the narrative voice and worldbuilding just rubbed me the wrong way. But I do need to give it another try, one of these days, because the story and world seemed to have so much potential. And I love the idea of automata.
I really enjoyed how the clash of cultures was present but not the focus throughout the story--how realistic the attitudes of superiority were. The meshing of the dehumanization of the fairies, with their dehumanization of her own "exotic" culture, to a lesser extent. And that the heroine started out in a show-biz life that is very realistic and makes you feel her need for escape without making it overly gritty.
But if the voice of it was bothering you, that's so subjective! I was in a mood to read that particular kind of book, so I may be being a little biased, too...
I know that feeling! Though then there's always the issue of trying to decide, am I really realizing what my novel is missing, or do I just want to stuff shiny new things into it because I'm bored?
Yeah, well--the fact is the feeling of inadequacy will pop up, attached to SOMETHING or other. XD
But in this case, it was so very much in the oeuvre of what I want to do, and there were very specific things that I realized I *want* my story to be comparable in that it's just not yet, and sure it's a first draft but...
This was not a case of "soul-crushing encounter with a genius that makes you despair of making back your ecological footprint even by organic gardening using the ash of your manuscripts as compost", though.
Luckily, I only read books with that much literary merit but rarely. Ufufu.

I know that the cover of this one is coming out of the trend set by Great and Terrible Beauty, though! XD
