My Asian Comics Love Life

Feb 11, 2010 22:18

I'll readily admit I spent more time in the last year or so reading comics than books.
Maybe more than I wrote, though definitely not more than I spent on work, if we include spinning...

Anyway.
It's been a torrid affair.

I wanted to do a Round Up and someday I'll have a really funny list of awards to all my favorites. Not today.

Let me just tell you ( Read more... )

manga, kyara-crushes, book recs, fanstuff

You know, I really, really, REALLY want to read more comics/Manga. I just don't. Mostly because I've never had a good place to go for recommendations of some I'd actually like. One of my Illustration friends recommended the webcomic The Meek to me which I've loved, and Hanna Is Not A Boys Name which I have mixed feelings about. Its a medium which I feel I fit really well (I mean seriously, the reason I'm majoring in Illustration is because visual art and story are among the two things that are most important to me) I've just...

lost track of what I was trying to say.

I will shut up now.

Well, if you want recommendations, all you have to do is ask. ^_^

If you like the graphic novel style, then it's really a matter of using the same reading interests to find the kind of comics you like. Of course it's hard to get access to a lot of comics...but if you can get used to occasionally bad translations, there are online scans of comics not available in the States. I use MangaFox.com mostly myself: it has a great search function where you can pick the different elements you're interested in.

Of course, this does smack of piracy. So I can keep on recommending some that are available in stores...

These both sound really good! The depth to some graphic novel storylines has surprised me. Seems like they only get better and better, and the best of them are as good as any novel. I still prefer a novel, personally, but really admire the art and like the way the text and art mesh into something more than the individual parts.

So far I've only read young adult graphic novels, though. Maybe I need to branch out, here.

Well, I actually haven't found many "mature woman" comics that I like (partly from the fact that they're thinner on the ground, partly that I read YA across mediums...)

Tramps Like Us is an exception in many ways!
