Octoberfest

Dear "Live" Journal,

October in New England is living up to ALL my expectations.

1. Chris and I had last Monday off, so we took a road trip down to NYC to visit our friends the Newtons. It was perfection. We (slumber) partied in their cool Brooklyn apartment, had lunch and enjoyed the views of Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty in Brooklyn Bridge ( Read more... )

Goddamn, 4 years in NYC is like 40 years in any other place. I had to google Brooklyn Bridge Park. This did not exist when I lived there (2000-2008). That said, I certainly HAVE been to the area now known as Brooklyn Bridge Park (and previously known as That Place in DUMBO where you will never ever see another person and you can walk right up to the river).

In terms of Mass.,you should let me know if/when you wanna do a day trip out to the country aka Western Mass. So beautiful in the fall! I miss it.

You’re also only like 5 hours from Montréal!

OMG, I've always wanted to go to Montreal!

You know, I wondered if that park was new. It was huge and absolutely immaculate. We were there all afternoon and only saw a portion of it.

I am jealous of your plane tickets like you would not believe. Flying to Seattle from Iowa should not be cost me $500, dammit.

However, thank you for the WW rec -- I've lost about 30 pounds since March. I'm plateaued at a size 14 at the moment, and have been taking it easy for a bit, but it's way better than the pushing-18W I was rocking at the beginning of the year. :)

That is AWESOME. I am a huge fan of WW. I've never known it not to work for people who followed it.

The one and ONLY thing I loved about living in Providence, RI was my job at the Amtrack station. I was able to take the train (for free) to any of Amtrack's destinations along the northeast line. Boston, Philly, NYC, and DC and I only had to pay my way back home- all of those destinations within a few minutes to a few hours away. It was awesome. The northeast is such a fun place to live! I also used to take the bus to go further north than Boston back when they didn't have a train line up that way. We would also go by bus to Mystic Seaport, Martha's Vineyard, and all of those beautiful little coastal towns along the way to Maine. OH! And you should take Kyu to Storyland in North Conway, NH in the next couple of years before he gets too old for it! It's a New England tradition ( ... )

My office is the same. Bagels on Thursday, cakes once a month, and catered meetings. Luckily, I'm off teaching most of the time now!

Storyland sounds like a good idea for the future. I've never been to NH!

I'm super jealous of your cheap flights! Flying into Cedar Rapids is a GD joke. I don't want to pay $600/ticket (x3) to fly into "scenic" CR and Des Moines isn't much cheaper. I definitely agree though that living in New England is great in terms of the proximity to so many states. This summer we camped up in the White Mountains, which are about 3 hours away from Providence. I joked that living in Iowa, a 3 hour car drive would get me to Omaha. A 3 hour car drive out here gets me through 2 states and into a beautiful national forest!

As of a few days ago, Southwest had tickets from Boston to DM for $184, but it didn't work with our schedule. Would that work for you guys?

Also, don't forget that a trip to RI is somewhere in the Millers' future. ;)

I am a huge fan.

In addition to showing me which foods are really not worth the calories, I think just having to record most food makes me a lot more mindful (i.e. uses my laziness against me). For instance, almost all fruit and vegetables are point-free, so I reach for them first because I don't have to record them. In contrast, foods prepared at most restaurants are complicated to calculate, so I'm more likely to say, "Fuck it! I'll make it myself."

In conclusion, you can use some of the tenants of WW without having to pay for it:

1. Eat mostly fruits and vegetables
2. Record everything else
3. Avoid eating at restaurants
4. Profit
