Ursula is magic indeed - and who can go past a talking dragon - now I'm being blown away - very windy in the bananas - whoop, there goes the keyboard............

Ursula has that gift of saying a great deal in very few words. I can only sigh in hopeless admiration!

I love these books too.
Have I mentioned "The Left Hand of Darkness" by the same author?

No, don't think so, but I would have done if I'd been wider awake - that is my absolutely favourite of all her 'grown up' books - it makes my hair stand on end, even when all they do is sit in a tent and look at each other...

I wonder why she felt she had to adopt the device of the sex-changing aliens in order for the alien to be 'female' at the point at which he and the narrator nearly end up having sex, though? Whose prejudices are being side-stepped there? No matter, it's an interesting enough device and you still see them as two male characters, and it's still utterly heartbreaking *sniffs and goes to fetch book from shelf in order to have heart broken all over again*

I did wonder that as well.
Perhaps she thought it wouldn't get published otherwise ... or maybe she wanted people to read it, who would put it down if it said "warning - gay love affair" on the cover!

And I hope lots of that sort of person did indeed read it and that maybe some of them had their attitudes changed as a result...
