Character's Name: SOHMA Yuki
Series: Fruits Basket
Timeline: End of chapter 48
Canon Resource Link: Canon Information // Character Information
Personality: Yuki Sohma is one of the thirteen Sohma family members who is possessed by a zodiac animal. In Yuki's case, he is possessed by the rat. This of course means he is an endless rival for Kyou, the cat. As the rat, Yuki is also gifted with the ability to be excellent at nearly everything he attempts (except for cooking).

Yuki has a "princely persona" which he constantly wears. The girls at his school adore him--some so much that they formed a Yuki fanclub. Nearly everyone thinks he's perfect and respects him at school, but deep down, Yuki knows that persona isn't the real him. The truth is that Yuki only acts polite because he wants other people to like him. This behavior stems from Akito's abuse of keeping him isolated from everyone and abusing him emotionally (and sometimes physically); his frail health as a child cause a rift to form between Yuki and his brother Ayame because the two very rarely saw each other; and Kyou hated him simply because he "was the rat" while the rest of the Sohma family tended not to speak with him. There was even an event which ocurred while Yuki was in the second grade where Hatori needed to erase the memories of his classmates. Even Yuki's mother thinks that he is a tool that has never had a useful thought in his entire life.

This severe isolation (which in a way continues at high school because of the fan club) left Yuki with very low self-esteem and an inferiority complex. Although his sunny, princely dispotion doesn't hint at the abuse he suffered as a child, Yuki's inner thoughts often reveal a troubled mind. He desperately wants to escape the Sohma family but lacks the courage to do so. He is a little proud he left the main Sohma house but at the same time is disappointed that he's still living with Shigure Sohma.

He has a decent relationship with most of the other members of the zodiac members; however many of them started out sour--Hatsuharu in particular hated Yuki because he was the rat who rode on the ox's head to the banquet and tricked the cat in the fairy tale. He does, however, feel an attachment to Kisa who suffered similar abuse, although not quite as severe as Yuki's.

One of Yuki's goals is to earn his freedom from Akito and to learn how to reveal his true personality. Part of his personality is his love of gardening--it is inferred he likes it because he's taking care of the plants; without him, the plants would wither and die.

Yuki was born with weak bronchioli and suffers from terrible asthma attacks on occasion which doesn't particularly help with the goal of keeping his body healthy enough not to transform. He's also talented at martial arts, and even though he started training later than Kyou, he's already become much better at it than him. He's also a very, very cranky person in the mornings who fights at his best and is completely unrestrained during that time. He's also claustrophobic and he flies into a slight panic when he feels like the walls are pressing closer.

What your character can offer: Yuki has the ability to transform into a rat--against his will--when hugged by a member of the opposite sex or when his body is under stress. Since the chip will be suppressing that, it's not all that hehlpful. However, Yuki is naturally good at things he tries, such as martial arts or gardening. The only thing he is particularly bad at is cooking. Don't eat it; you'll get food poisoning and die.

What items will they be bringing with them? Clothes. No, I didn't think it was obvious. Some strawberry seeds, too, if that's okay?

The old mattress sank beneath his petite frame as he sat down on it. Yuki placed the small pot onto the night stand and regarded the sprout that struggled to grow. In a way, it was like him, fighting against the odds to survive. The sprout, like him, wasn't able to do it alone, though. It needed him to take care of it, just like he needed Akito to have a reason to exist. Without Yuki to water the sprout daily, it would wither and die.

It was funny, the way a rat could be so similar to a plant. Or maybe it was just because of who he was. He found it unlikely that the other incarnations of the rat would be so similar to a plant. The other rats had probably grown up to be important people, even if they were cursed. They had probably been successful and broken away from the Sohma family--something he strove to do. Like the sprout, however, he was trapped; the Sohma family was his little soil-filled pot that he couldn't escape. Even if he wanted his roots to grow large and thick, they would press against the pot, unable to go anywhere.

Why were things this way? Why didn't he have the capabilities he was supposed to have? If he was cursed with this "gift" of the rat, then why did he feel like such a failure? The goals he set, no matter how easy to reach, always seemed just out of his grasp. He always needed that extra push and, somehow, Honda-san was always there to gently provide it.

Things here in Discedo were... different, though. Akito wasn't here and he didn't need to listen to him say how worthless he was as the rat. His mother wasn't here to try and control his every action and thought. Ayame wasn't here, either, although he was someone Yuki felt he could tolerate; after all, the rift between himself and his brother had definitely been made smaller lately. Although he would never admit it, he did sort of miss him.

Yuki sighed and smiled softly at the sprout. It didn't need to worry; he would take good care of it, just like Honda-san always took care of him.

It's New Years, isn't it? If you don't mind my asking, what is everyone doing to celebrate? I suppose the majority of you will be celebrating with your friends and drinking wine or what have you. Am I right?

For me, it's the first time I'm celebrating New Years without the option of going up to my family's main house, so it's a little odd not being able to choose whether or not to go.

Oh--Hatsuharu, what about the Sohma family members that are here? Are we still going to try having a banquet to keep with the family tradition or are we going to do something else? Perhaps that question would be better off being asked to Hatori.

A-Ah. I'm rambling, aren't I?

Well, everyone. Please have a Happy New Year and welcome in the year of the Tiger.
