We've just experienced a milestone: For the first time ever, Squish--not Kaga, who is a ninja and does this all the time--got himself accidentally trapped in the laundry room. He apparently ran in there without me noticing while I was getting something, and since I never expect him to do that, I closed the door when I left without even looking. ( Read more... )

squish, utterly absurd, fashion, kaga

Wait until Expendables comes out. Personally, I think it's going to be awesome, but I fear it will be awesomely bad. Either way, it has pretty much every major action hero of the 80s and 90s in it, so you know there will be an epic amount of explosions and dudes dying.

We're planning to see that when it comes out.

That does not solve the problem of something to do ON July 4. Husband is a war vet with PTSD. He doesn't get along with fireworks noise.

Oh, I didn't know. :-(

I'm sorry for the rec, then.

Nothing to be sorry for. :) As I said, we are planning to see it--he can make a delineation between fantasy violence and realistic violence. (Although the sequence in the first Iron Man where the convoy is attacked has to be skipped whenever we watch the DVD; they did too good a job of re-creating Afghanistan.) It's just not available this weekend.

Fireworks can too much resemble gunfire and mortars, and thus are problematic.

-all of it done in a tiny, floaty, whispery little-girl voice.
Sounds like someone took one too many hits off the "I'll be just like Delerium" bong.

You could always go the teenager route, and give your money to a movie that you don't mind supporting, and then just walk into one of the other really bad candidates, like The Last Airbender or Jonah Hex.

Sadly, all other issues aside, TLA sounds to not even be *fun* bad. And Jonah Hex is so short that we'd still have a portion of the evening to cover.

I'm a little bit boggled that there are so many bad movies this summer, yet none of them are really epically bad in that majestic, entertaining way.

I think we'll have to look past the cinematic realm for ideas this year. Maybe some kind of nighttime road trip, or an actual live performance somewhere.

I think the epic ones are waiting til a bit later in the summer. Or are in and out of the theatres too fast to notice. (I need to find a theatre - I didn't realize Ondine is out, and I think that's gonna be a quick flash in the pan.)

Can you guys take a trip to Canada for the night? They're still going to have a fireworks display, but it should be easier to find a part of the city that doesn't have them going on.

In my experience, live music hasn't worked so well to drown out really insistent fireworks, although club-level loud can. Hrm. Tough proposition. (I just realized last night that the fireworks here are probably going to be madinsane.)

I think my sister has the almost-best deal - she's flying home on July 4. The only downside is she's going the wrong way; flying east to west with the dark would be great on July 4; see all the pretties without hearing any of the noise.

Apparently Canada is not the best idea, because lots of people make the assumption that things won't be busy since Canada doesn't celebrate July 4 (snerk), and the border crossings end up jammed.

If we can't come up with anything else, I could just pack him off to the Merc for the night (if the music isn't something he can't stand, anyway, which is the case more often than not nowadays). I'm pretty sure we've done that on a previous Fourth.

a friend is taking me to see... *something*... tomorrow. If what we see is good, I will let you know of it.

she took me to see the lastest shrek in 3D a couple of weeks ago and it was Shrek. If you like Shrek movies, it was fun (I do), and if not... you won't like this one.

But I will also check out what else is playing on the magic list she is bringing for suggestions. I have a few folks in my spheres with similar/the same issues for the 4th, so I have a pretty good idea of what you are looking for (read: sound with lots of LOUD and plenty of DISTRACTION).

Looks like the A-Team is still in theatres. It should be full of stupid fun and splodey noise goodness. And it is showing at Cinnebarre, where you can order drinks and food brought to you while you watch the movies. :D

It's a fun movie, full of the spirit of the show (with Cannell involved, not really a shock), but I don't think it's going to fit the bill for a July 4 viewing. It's an updated origin-story; instead of Vietnam, they originate in the current Middle East conflict.

I don't think it would normally be a triggery issue, but after a couple of days of Seattle-style early fireworks celebrating, it's probably one to avoid on the 4th itself.

The only cool thing Courtney Love ever did (well, besides giving birth to a rather interesting young woman) was seriously attempt to kick the ass of Mary Lou Lord, the 90's Queen of the Whispery-Voiced Hippie Chicks. Since I used to date a "Seattle Scene" musician once upon a time, I've had occasion to both meet and loathe many such women. I'm sorry that they still exist outside of Portland. ;-)

Yeah, Fourth of July is just...wacky. It's too bad you folks don't know a sound engineer with his/her own studio. Those places are QUIET.
