I don't think that's wrong at all. I know a lot of people who work on larger canvases (myself included) for at least some of the icon process. it's just one of those things that's a personal preference, you know? Doesn't say anything about your skill or process except that you see things better at a larger size.

If it works out fine for you, then it's not wrong, so don't be afraid to tell people your actual process in your tuts!
