Notes
- Made in Photoshop CS3 but I'm pretty sure it'll be translatable.
- This won't look good with every picture. So, I advise something with lots of colors in order to get the effect. :D
- Play around with opacity! Very important!

01. Get your picture, and crop crop crop. Well, do it once but whatever you like is fine. :D I'm using a picture of Narumi Riko at the moment.

02. Duplicate your base layer and put it on Screen, for this I did 40%.

03. Duplicate your base layer again but this time put it on Soft Light, and at 30%. Try variating and come up with something you like.

04. I then used an Orange Overlay Layer (#ffb764) at 36% to come up with the trademark hues that calixa uses in her icons. Har har har &hearts I suck. >>;;

+

05. Next thing I used was a Dark Brown Exclusion Layer (#4a3308) at 25% with no real reason. Except I like how using exclusion turns out so really, personal preference. :|

+

06. This next step is optional but when your icon turns out to 'white' (as in you're not listening and you used a white background >:\) I usually mute it with a gray and sometimes it looks good sometimes it doesn't. That's why it's optional. :D But it's a Gray Multiply Layer (#bbbbbb) at 40%. Sometimes Color Burn does the trick too.

+

07. Then the fun part. A Selective Coloring Layer. So go to Layer > New Adjustment Layers > Selective Color.

Reds
Cyan: -75%
Magenta: 0%
Yellow: 100%
Black: 0%

08. Then we have a Brightness/Contrast Layer. Which again go to Layer > New Adjustment Layers > Brightness/Contrast.

Brightness: +10
Contrast: 0

But if you want you can play around here. :D

09. Next is an arguably interesting part, because again it's personal preference. I now go back to my base layer and Sharpen.

10. However, now it seems a little too crisp. So I want to fade the sharpen but not completely lose it. Here is where I go Edit > Fade Sharpen. And fade it to 50%. And then you get your final piece.

That's all! &hearts
Hope that helped you shixon

And if you want to see, it's basically in most of my icons. :| Except for that latest batch.
