Made in GIMP, totally translatable :)

I don't often do tutorials, usually because I don't follow one set coloring for my icon batches, but this one I've been using A LOT and thought it warranted it's own tut :) Especially 'cause GIMP tutorials are so few and far between.

Oh, and this will definitely work best for icons with lots of orange/white in them!

01. Okay, let’ start with our base:

I have a soft spot for redheads, hence my use of the coloring quite often ;)

02. Now, I think it’s plenty light enough already, but if you wanna go for some extra brightness, you can always duplicate the base, then set it to screen and lower the opacity to about 30-40 percent.

03. Now for the actual coloring! I really want to bring out the red tone of her hair, so I go to the handy dandy Channel Mixer (Colors > Components > Channel Mixer). Make sure the Output Channel is on Red, and then up the reds to around 115-130, depending on your image. Because mine had lots of oranges, it was on 125. Then change the blue down to -30 or somewhere around there.

04. I wanted the colors a little brighter, so I went to Colors > Hue Saturation and upped the Master Saturation to about 20.

05. And now we go to Colors > Levels and change the Channel to red. On the input levels (the middle box, to the right of the eyedropper symbol) type in 1.30 or thereabouts. Then change the Channel to blue and lower the input levels to about 89.

06. Okay, so now it’s looking almost done. But I still want the background to have more blue in it, so it’s back to the channel mixer! Just one change this time, though: with the output channel on red, change the blue to around -10.

07. One last step! Once again go to Hue/Saturation, and change the master saturation to +10 or so, for extra-vivid colors. Oh, and sharpen once =)

Voila!

So, I would love to hear if this was helpful to you, and see your results ;)
