Yes, my first icon tutorial.. i've written about 6 - just working on putting this up. This is also Screen Posted at icon_tutorial so more people can learn from this tutorial. Just a note: This tutorial uses CURVES, SELECTIVE COLOUR LAYERS, and LAYER MODES.You NEED an adequate understanding of curves and selective colours before continuing. if you do not fully understand curves or selective colour layers - i suggest reading about them at: http://www.thegoldenmean.com/technique/curves1.html. Okay? Lets Continue:

We will be turing This:
to:

First off, we will start with this cap of Veronica Mars from vm-caps. After some resizing and cropping (modify it for your own personal style) you will have something that looks like this:

Quite Horrible indeed. Don't worry, we'll fix that.

Duplicate the base layer and set its layer mode to SCREEN at 100% Opacity 100% Fill.

Create a new layer and fill it with #003663, Set the layer mode to EXCLUSION at 100% Opacity 100% Fill.

Create a new layer and fill it with #92CAE0, Set the layer mode to SOFT LIGHT at 100% Opacity 100% Fill.

Create a new layer and Stamp Visible ( ALT+CTRL+SHIFT+E) Set the layer mode to COLOUR BURN at 100% Opacity 100% Fill.

Go to LAYER > NEW ADJUSTMENT LAYER > SELECTIVE COLOUR to create a Selective Colour Layer. Name it whatever you want.

(A Note with Selective Colour Layers: no matter what; its always best to start off with the Neutrals Pallete, then to the Cyans and Reds and whatnot. The Neutrals are the foundation... always fix them first :D )

Adjust your Settings so they match this:

NEUTRALS:
Cyan: +76
Magenta: -6
Yellow: +10
Black: -6

REDS:
Cyan: -13
Magenta: +9

You'll then have something that looks like this:

Create a New CURVES LAYER (LAYER > NEW ADJUSTMENT LAYER > CURVES) and set your Input and Output so they match this:

Input: 61
Output: 9

Set the layer mode to SOFTLIGHT at 50% Opacity 70% Fill. You'll have something that looks like this:

Create a new layer and Stamp Visible ( ALT+CTRL+SHIFT+E) then Sharpen ONCE. Set the layer mode to NORMAL at 70% Opacity 70% Fill.

on a New layer, paste this brush... ( it has a transparent background - its in a black table so you can see it :) ) I do not know who made it - if it was you Just let me know and i'll credit away! Its been resized and cropped for this icon.

brush

(If copying+pasting doesnt work for this - you can download the psd here: http://vineyard.bullet-theory.org/swirlpsdfordownload.psd ITS ONLY 32KB, smaller than the actual finished icon!

Finally, Create a new layer and Stamp Visible ( ALT+CTRL+SHIFT+E) Set the layer mode to SCREEN at 30% Opacity 100% Fill.

And Voila! Here you have a Nicely Coloured icon! this Effect works on heaps and heaps of icons.. If you have a query... or want to show me what you did with this tutorial - Please comment below, its a good feeling to know that i've helped in some way!
