yeah, the original is made my me and i was kinda surprised seeing it on this tutorial.

yeah and people who are reading this, please don't take that icon and use it because that one was custom made for someone but i guess you can use it as a reference for a tutorial.

If you're using PS you can do a 2px stroke on the small b/w image.

What you can do is use the rectangle Selection Tool and make a longbox selection.
Then, holding down the CTRL key, deselect "slices" of the longbox, thus breaking it up into seperate squares.

Then choose your color, and switch it over so it's a gradient instead. Adjust the angle so when you fill the selection, it will gradually fade from solid to white.

or if that is waaay too wordy and difficult, you could just use the rectangle Selection Tool and individual make a square selection, fill it with color, make the next box, fill it with a slightly light color, and so on for however many boxes you want.
