All I want to do is make an animated gif in GIMP. I have looked for a tutorial, but I've had no such luck. I'm using GIMP 2.8. All I need is someone to help me.
okay, here's what you do. hopefully this works, I'm using 2.6 and it worked.
load all of your layers.
go to Filters > Animation > Optimize (for gif)
in the new window, you can see GIMP added little comments on each layer next to the layer name... such as, "your layer name".png (2000ms) the (2000ms) is the delay between each frame. you can change this to your liking.
then, go to Image > Mode > Indexd I chose "generate optimum palette" max colors 255, color dithering: none. click 'convert'
now save your image. go to 'save as' type "image name".gif and GIMP will ask you if you would like to merge layers or save as animation. save as animation.
*To open screencaps: File >> Open as Layers and then select the screencaps needed for the gif
(Here you can add text, resize, crop, etc.)
To save gifs:
1. File >> Save As 2. Change file name to [name of gif].gif 3. Export file dialog: switch to Save As Animation and click Export 4. Save as GIF dialog: make sure Loop Forever is selected at the very least. Depending on how fast you want the gif to move, change the delay between frames (I like between 125 and 150 for most gifs). Click Save. 5. You should have a gif.
What sort of error is Gimp giving you? Is there an actual dialog box, or is it just saving it as a single layer...? If you could tell us what specifically is going wrong, maybe we could help you more. I know it's frustrating...
Gimp is a fantastic free program, but it does have its errors. I've had to uninstall and reinstall it and GAP probably 4 or 5 times to correct issues with image extraction and saving files as gifs; it kept popping up various windows that basically said the program was no longer able to perform those functions because of missing data or an unknown error. It hasn't happened in a while, though.
Turns out I was doing everything right. I didn't know I had to view the gifs in a browser. That is why I thought I kept messing up. Thanks for your help anyway.
