Texts on gifs - using GIMP

I need some help! I would like to know how to add text on gifs - a lot like this one here.

When I try to add text to gifs, they end up looking like so and so (I know they're not the same as the example, but I just want to show you how messy the text ends up looking).

Please help? :)

animation: text effect, program: gimp

It looks like maybe your text is on a transparent portion of the layer. In order to get the nicer look, you'll need to merge the text into a layer that is non-transparent. Notice how the bottom layer of the example gif has the text, then other layers are transparent for that text to show through.

What I normally do is select the text layer, delete that area from all other gif layers except the bottom one, and then merge the text layer down onto the bottom layer.

If you open this example in GIMP, it should be easier to see than the example you gave (which has so much transparency in the layers it's hard to see).

I hadn't even thought about this problem until I was browsing lj and saw the post. Thanks so much for your answer. I'm sure I'll make use of it in the future. You are a star!
