I don't know how or if it's possible to see the dimensions of a selection area in Photoshop, but what I usually do is I crop the image I want to edit using IrfanView, where you can see the dimensions, and copy the image into Photoshop for editing.

Would using the Select tool instead of the Crop tool work for you? You can set the dimensions using the Fixed Size option.

This is a valid work around,
but I still don't get why there is no "style" option for the crop tool similar to the one in select tool. The crop dimensions are set to "ratio" and I haven't found a way to change this style to "fixed size" as it can be done with the select tool.
