Blending Images

Does anyone know how I can make similar icons like these using GIMP? More specifically, how to blend the images together, especially in the first icon. Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

I don't have gimp I know you'd need to do something like a layer mask and draw it manually.

Gimp layer mask:

I wouldn't use a layer mask - just get a 100x100 canvas, copy both of the images onto it, and use the eraser tool, resizing/positioning as necessary. It's exacting work, but worth it to get such a lovely effect. :)

You could also use a layer mask, but you wouldn't have to.

I only say a layer mask because its easier to fix where as erasing has only a few undos.

You could make the background of the image black, paste both images and resize and position as necessary, but make sure they overlap. Then, make the layer that is on top invisible by clicking the eye. take the foreground to transparent gradient and make sure the box beside it is checked. Pick a point from the center down and click. Then make that one invisible and repeat on the other.

If you need more help with blending in GIMP, I have a tutorial with 5 different techniques.
