This post is right on the line of the minimum standard for inclusion in this community. Although you have included the rudiments of "what," consider adding more "how" and "why" in the future. The point, for the community, is about the explanation, not about the recipe.
I have Gimp 2.6.8 What else could be used for the exclusion in step 2? Mine doesn't have that setting. Thank you for this tutorial. It's very complicated to translate some to Gimp.

Set the first two to Screen and the third one to Substract and you'll get the same effect as setting one layer on Exclusion in any other program.
OP: please be sure that you include all details in your tutorials. this is one reason why we insist on explanatory tutorials rather than 'tutorial-by-numbers'.
