I'm using Photoshop CS3 and lately, the canvas size has been causing problems. I usually make borders using canvas size and whenever I set the pixels - for example, I extended an image of 400x400 to 405x405 - the width of both sides would be different.

That's because it only added 5 pixels which can't be split evenly? 2 on one side, 3 on the other.

as jadedleopard pointed out, you're adding an odd number of pixels. you need an even number so they can be split evenly between both sides. ;)

I agree with jadeleopard five pixels doesn't divide by 2, maybe do six pixels instead?

If you don't like that, try making a new layer on top. Use the wand tool to make a selection of the whole layer. Then go to edit>strroke. Select a color and a width and you have a nice border that is even in width.

While everyone above is correct, I think what you're trying to do is create a 5 pixel border around a 400 pixel image. If that's the case, when you resize the canvas, choose 410px so that it can put an even 5px border along all 4 sides. Otherwise you will get what they said above, 2 on one side, 3 on the other.
