colour

I switch to use my notebook instead of the desktop, and the colour looks really different between them. And I wonder which colour should be the one everyone's looking. I want to choose the right one since this will affect how I make graphics.

it's an issue that's long plagued graphics makers.....laptop screens suck when it comes to colour representation. there's no way to adjust individual monitors so every image looks absolutely identical on them all. each manufacturer's monitors will look a bit different (even different monitors from the same manufacturer), no matter how carefully you attempt to calibrate them. add in that a huge number of folks looking at your graphics probably haven't done any calibration at all and....well, you get the picture (no pun intended). the upshot, calibrate your monitor(s) as best you can so that you're happy with it and try not to stress too much over the rest. i won't even go into how the eyes/brain process and interpret colour vary from person to person. ;)

as to the icon you have posted, on my monitor (a new hi-res sony touch-screen that, admittedly, i haven't calibrated yet, so it's still on factory settings), it looks a bit on the dark side leaning into the brown range rather than orange.

(edt for grammar fail)

It really gets on my nerves that people can't see the colouring I intended to do, but I guess I'll just have to accept it.(stupid computer!)
Thank you so much!

yeah, if you are forced to work on a laptop, about the only thing you can do is experiment and learn what adjustments you need to automatically make so your graphics look like they do on your desktop....a royal, time consuming pain in the arse to be sure.

On my desktop, the icon looks rather pale, brown and slightly orange tinted. Sadly, the colors will always look different, judging by whichever computer the viewer of the graphic is using. I personally like to use a desktop when making graphics since I find the quality better than on a laptop.

Yeah, I like to use a desktop too, but I'm forced to use the notebook, so the colour really get on my nerves.
Thanks!

I use my laptop for making icons, since I can make them wherever I am at the time. I only realised recently that on a desktop the saturation and yellows are waayy to vibrant. So now I bring them to my desktop computer and change the saturation and fix colour balance.

Exactly, everything looks more vibrant on desktop.
But that'd use lots more time, so I'll just accept that the colouring looks so different on different computers.

it's quite pale for me, and the dark areas are a soft kind of dark gray.

save for web on photoshop cs4 gives you the option to view it in different modes 'windows pc' mode, 'mac' mode and another one that i can't quite remember. i don't know if that helps...
