Difficulty: Virtually none.
Steps: 5 super-simple steps.
1. Prepare your base by cropping, sharpening, minor colour adjustments, etc.
2. Make a new layer and fill it with black (#000000). Set the blending mode to “Saturation” at 100%. Your icon should now be black and white and look something like the second image shown above.
3. Make another new layer and fill it with black (#000000). Set the blending mode to “Overlay” at 50%. You can adjust the blending a little mode to what you think looks best, but the ultimate goal is to get your icon darker. It may look too dark now, but it will work out well in the end.
4. Merge down by clicking Layer>Merge Visible or using Ctrl+Shift+E.
5. Duplicate your layer and set the blending mode to “Soft Light.” This takes all the steps we’ve done and makes them pop.
