“Glorious” Icon tutorial

Using Photoshop CS2
This icon was so easy to make, I’m sure that no one should have any problems with it!
I started with this screen cap, courtesy of
dj43 from the Chronicles of Narnia. I made my selection with the rectangular marquee tool and resized it to 100x100. Even though the colouring was fairly good on it already, I really wanted the lamp light to shine a bit more so I duplicated the layer and set it to screen at 50%.
I created a new layer (ctrl + n) and filled it with a navy blue colour, #0f1842. I usually go a bit darker, but in this case it worked out nicer with a slightly lighter shade. Set that blue layer to exclusion. You can duplicate it if you like, the effect of two exclusion layers is often rather wicked ^__^

Another new layer, this time a beige-brown colour, something along the lines of #c8ac9b. Set this layer to soft light. Now the icon is almost murky looking, but don’t worry, it’ll end out nicely. To remedy the muddy look, I made two new layers. I got a nice hot pink colour, #ed145a and with my gradient tool going from pink to transparent, I made a selection on the top right hand corner of one of the new layers, and the bottom left hand corner of the other. Of course, you can do this with just one layer, but in the interest of tweaking the opacity and suchlike, you might be best with two. Set each of these layers to lighten (my new favourite blending mode!)

Now, just make those cute little pink pretties invisible for a moment by hitting the little eye by the layer. Click on ctrl + a, then go to edit >> copy merged >> ctrl + v. Set that new layer to soft light at 100% and desaturate it (ctrl + u) set it on top of the pink layers and make them visible again, and you’ll see what a difference it makes.
Now to me, it’s still a tad too cloudy and murky looking, so I went with a colour burn layer. I used #b9c4ef and set it on top of the soft light layer. It really brings out the edges a bit and adds the required OOMPH!

The centre part between Lucy and the lamppost is a bit bare, so I used a sparkle brush (you can get them just about anywhere) and put it in white. I put that layer all the way beneath the pinks and duplicated it, dragged it on top and set it to screen so it would stand out a bit more.
And now for the text! The fonts I used were freebooter script for “glorious” and Garamond for the rest. Again, I put this underneath the pink layers and wrote in black. The lighten layers soften the hardness of the black colour.
That’s it! Easy as pie, didn’t I tell you? If you have any questions, just ask. And post your results, I’d love to see them! ^__^
