There's a very (VERY) recent TV show called 'Eureka' which is supposedly set somewhere in the Pacific North-West. There's an article about it on Wikipedia at
I'm not sure how useful this is, since I doubt the show has gotten to NZ yet, and so you probably haven't had a chance to see it or anything, but it's the only one I can think of off the top of my head (what with factoring in my complete lack of knowlege of US geography and all).
Hmmm... What about 'Supernatural'? The first season's downloadable, and it can happen damn near ANYWHERE. Two brothers in search of their father, running around doing Ghostbuster-things all over the place; the eps are gory and detailed and angsty and funny and they have *no* trouble with either larceny, investigative work, or believing in magic. No trouble whatsoever. There was this bit in the first ep where Sam (the younger brother; the older one's Dean) was complaining about how when he was a kid he had whined about the Monster Under The Bed and his father had NOT told him that there wasn't anything there; instead, Dad had given his son a .22 rifle and expected him to take care of the problem. I love these guys; they believe in Bigfoot (because they know what range North American Yeti hunt in), Bloody Mary (because they nearly got slaughtered by her) and the almighty power of a shotgun loaded with rock-salt
( ... )
I need to burn off my harddrive before I download anything else. Feel weird enough as it is with the battery sitting out next to it. @_@
Hmm... and Sam's a telekentic. Actually, the way TGA is shaping up, sounds like a good series to get into. *looks up Supernatural on wiki and somehow gets distracted reading about John Constantine...*
So logically, the next best thing would be to look for good fanfiction to the series to act as a basic introduction. ^_________^ (well, it's worked for us before)
It may just be me but I feel that part of your problem is the Black organization; they PLAN, and if Hirokini is on their side they know about Conan and company, and will have ACTED on that information while the boys are traveling. Also while the feel of TGZ may be random travel, the fact that they are heading (granted slowly) back to Japan indicates the boys know something (or have a plan that requires them to be there). So far, we the readers, have little clue as to what this might be as you show little investigation, but such investigation must be happening.
Have you considered a crossover with The Pretender? Delaware (or anywhere, given Jared) and an organization dedicated to the use of young technical genius... The Center might be a branch of the B.O.

Will have to look into that one further, if nothing else than for my own amusement.
