I hate everybody who knows that they can walk all over me and treat me like a doormat because I'm the nice one. I hate it when somebody purposely avoids talking to me for whatever reason and knows that simply saying "oh I'm sorry I've just been so busy!" is an unassailable defense, because if I try to ask anything that suggests I don't believe it,

Ugh, what a crappy situation. Since you have mutual friends, would it be possible to have one of them help you out? Or even, since he's "so busy" go out of your way to get it back? You could call him and say, "I know you've been super busy, so I'll meet you outside your building before you leave for work at ?:??AM (or whatever)". If you need to, lie about why you need it so badly (since you know, having something that's expensive that's yours for 4 months isn't a good enough excuse to give it back).

It's at that point (actually, long before that point) that you are not just within your rights to be a bitch, and not just do you deserve to be a bitch, but you're pretty much FORCED to be a bitch. Tell me who the guy is, and I'll find him and break his damn legs (and get your pad back). If you lose mutual friends because you were kind enough to loan someone something of yours, and they're too much of an asshole to give it back, then those people weren't your friends in the first place. Anyone in their right mind would side with you in that situation, and if they don't, they're clearly shitty "friends".

That's miserable, I'm sorry. The one thing I'll say is, as someone who is perpetually "the nice one"... it really doesn't make you a bitch to be firm sometimes. I've had a lot more luck just generally since I realized that.
