And no one ever tells you that forever feels home
Sitting alone inside your head
Ichigo has spent so long dreading this fight that when it actually does come, he almost misses her slight figure in the reflections of the windows. But even though he’s exhausted and beaten he still recognises Rukia, and he makes himself claw his way over to the window where the Hollow ‘kindly’ maintains a sliver of contact with the real world.
The first thing that strikes him is that she has not drawn her sword. The second thing he notices is that she is yelling, but that is hardly new. Through the filters of his inner world her voice comes across scratchy and tinny, like a badly done recording. If he leans his head against the window just so and listens instead of watching, he can hear what she is saying.
“Ichigo!” she yells, as if he messed up konso again instead of being consumed entirely by his Hollow. “Ichigo are you listening? You can fight the Hollow! What did I tell you about not giving up?”
There is the lazy sound of a blade being swung by its hilt wrap, followed by the voice of his Hollow. “I’ve told you already, it’s useless. Do you want to know how Ichigo’s been so far?” The voice takes on a conspiring tone. “He’s been suffering. I’ve stuffed him so deep into his own soul that all he can do is scream at what I’ve done, and all he succeeds in doing is hurting himself. It doesn’t even rain anymore, because I’m in charge, and I’m happy!”
Even inside his mind, the shrill laughter of his Hollow grates on his ears. Rukia appears to be silent, and Ichigo presses closer to the window, straining to hear if she has anything more to say.
“You better be sick or dead, Ichigo,” she whispers bitterly. The clear sound of a blade being drawn rings loudly in contrast, followed by the sound of steel against steel.
Ichigo raises his head and screams his pain to the bone-dry sky.
