4 Times Tosh was Proud of Herself Before Torchwood Screwed it All Up (and One Time Torchwood Actually Helped)-an Almost Five-Times fic that didn't want to cooperate

Sin: Pride
Character: Tosh
other characters/pairings: implied Jack/Ianto and Owen/Gwen, one-sided Owen/Tosh, Jack/Tosh if you squint your eyes and are a little drunk
Rating: PG-13 (for language)
Word Count: 985
Spoilers/Warnings: none
Summary: exactly what the title says. For tw_lucky_7

A/N #1: This exploded into some sort of character study 5 times fic or something. I owe Tosh some love after this. Definitely. Please note that I do love Tosh, and I wasn’t trying to beat her to the ground, it just happened. This has no specific timeline except for each specific thing happened after the incident mentioned (and the last one which happens sometime after the beginning of s2). Also, I really had to beat down the Janto muses on this one BECAUSE THIS IS ABOUT TOSH, NOT YOU TWO. GRR.
A/N #2: About the 4th drabble-I even rewatched the episode to understand what Tosh’s equation did but I’m still a little sketchy on it. Please, please, let me know if I’ve messed something up too badly regarding it, so that I can fix it.

I kinda rushed this. sorry...

1.
Jack often told Tosh that with her knowledge, she could conquer the world. Jack was proud of all she had done. Suzie had once made the joke that Tosh could build herself a personal army of Tosh-bots in their archives and no one would be any wiser. Tosh beamed with pride both times.

That was before Canary Wharf.

Owen had commented on it once the day before they hired Gwen. Said that she should have built the damn robots in the basement and they could use them as decoys to draw PC Cooper off the case. Jack’s flinch had been obvious even then, and now looking back, so was Ianto’s.

2.
“Sure you don’t want anything Tosh?”

“Really sure,” she paused, “a friend of mine caught hepatitis off a burger from one of these places.”

Jack and Gwen both froze in the middle of taking bites of their burgers. Tosh suspected that behind her, Ianto had too (she knew Owen wasn’t listening). She was usually the butt of Gwen and Owen’s unintentionally cutting remarks (less since the Lisa-incident, obviously) about having no life outside Torchwood. It gave her a sick sort of pride to turn the tables on them for once. Gwen was still learning that Tosh could hold her own

That was before the cannibals and the Space Whale.

Tosh didn’t make jokes or comments about meat anymore. She’d gone off meat herself after the Beacons, she wasn’t too proud to admit that, and none of them had eaten meat from the time they had heard of the Space Whale until they were sure all of it had been disposed of and there was no chance of it being in their food anymore. The Beacons was a mission none of them would look back on with fondness.

3.
On some level, Tosh was proud of herself for staying out of the Relationship Dance that was going on in Torchwood Three. Oh, she still wanted Owen, but she would have preferred to keep her relationships separate from business. She suspected that was why it was so hard to pin down when Ianto and Jack had actually begun their relationship; Jack obviously had lusted after Ianto since he hired him, and it was pretty obvious (even to Owen) that something had been going on since Suzie, but she noticed that Ianto was adept at rebuffing the captain during missions and such. Even when she spent her one day a year with Tommy it was outside the Hub and they tried not to talk about her work.

That was before Mary.

The Mary-incident (much like the Lisa-incident, as she had taken to naming the two of them) in hindsight wasn’t completely her fault; there were “what-ifs” from just about every side of the equation. What if she had asked x? What if they had done y differently? What if Jack had told them z? But it opened her eyes. Maybe Jack and Ianto, and Gwen and Owen, (and Suzie and Owen) had the right idea. Maybe it was easier to have someone on the inside to spend your nights with. Then you didn’t have to go looking for trouble.

4.
She had finally come up with-slash-discovered an equation that would allow them to open the Rift in controlled situations without it destroying the city. It was one of her greatest achievements yet while working for Torchwood. She knew Jack would be proud of her too. She figured she’d have it ready to present to the team by the time her grandfather had his 88th birthday party and everyone else would love it too.

That was before Abaddon.

It was her calculations that enabled Owen to open the rift, which in turn led to their mutiny, which in turn led to Jack lying in the morgue for three days and counting. She had felt like she was on top of the world before visiting the dance hall, and now their captain was dead and she felt like shit.

And the one time it didn’t…

Somehow, Owen always managed to take advantage of her better nature, Tosh thought, ever since the incident with the Space Pig. It probably had to do with the fact that she was head over heels for him, but was it still taking advantage of if she knew exactly was she was doing and he technically had no clue? She sighed. She had to get this done before Jack came back from wherever he was. Hopefully groveling at Ianto’s feet or something while they waited for time to catch up again.

“So the Doctor says hello,” a familiar voice said, breaking through her musings, and Tosh looked up from her laptop to see Jack hovering over her, a shit-eating grin on his face.

“What?”

“The Doctor. I was travelling with him. He sends his regards. Kept going on about you actually,” Jack’s eyebrow quirked, “something about a pig in London?”

“Oh that,” Tosh blushed, “Owen asked me to fill in for him because he was sick. I thought I told you that.”

“Ah yes, sick. As in, completely hungover,” Jack snorted, “I remember that.”

“I didn’t say that,” Tosh protested, “anyways, why would the Doctor say anything about me? I panicked.”

“And yet somehow, he raved about you when I mentioned you were part of my team,” Jack crossed his arms over his chest, “I’m always proud of you Tosh, I hope you know that, but having the Doctor’s favor as well? You’ve surpassed yourself. He remembered you. And I don’t want you to look down on yourself for being good at your job, okay?”

“Thank you Jack,” Tosh said after a pause, her heart beating faster with joy.

“Excellent,” Jack commented, “now why don’t you leave Owen’s job for Owen to do, and I buy you a celebratory drink or something?”

In her entire life, Tosh had never felt so proud.
