It's funny because I'm old!

I was reading through an AIM log from about five years ago and came across this snippet of a conversation I had with a younger friend. Considering I just had my 40th birthday, I thought it was particularly funny. The conversation evolved from us discussing frosting made with cream cheese, which my friend had never had before and thought sounded ( Read more... )

Your Mom tells me that she still has the microwave, it still runs, it was considered a 'small' one at the time and still is, it was only $180. She says,it was made in the USA and still going strong. Plus, she says to tell you she loves you. PS, she still has your VCR! And it still works.

*dies!* Okay, here's the really funny part--my family had an Amana RadarRange microwave. We inherited it from my grandmother, when I was in high school. It was roughly the size of an oven, or maybe a Volkswagen Beetle. It came with a cookbook that gave instructions on how to microwave things like turkey (yes, an entire turkey, bones and all), chicken (same deal as the turkey), and other things that most people do not think of, when they think "microwave". There were recipes for sweetbreads in there, too (and wow, nothing says "vile" like "baked goods baked via microwave radiation" XP).

I still remember that the microwave was this huge novelty, when my family finally got one. I remember we went through a phase where we had microwave popcorn practically every night, because we could. There was also the phase of, "Oh, don't worry about making lunch; I'll just cook a hot dog in the microwave." XD ( ... )

Oh yes, I remember the microwave being the huge novelty too. Like I said, it was a big deal when we finally got one. I remember sometimes my mom would use it to make these weird puffy little egg omelets for me to take to school, that always made my friends go o_O

But I'm jealous because you had an ACTUAL radar range! That is so cool!

*snort*

Ahh, the dark ages. Good times.

I remember the first familial microwave, too. We got it as a family christmas present. The VCR was the same way.

The biggest novelty with the microwave was reheating cups of tea or coffee and making "baked" potatoes (though my mother was convinced we would blow up our house if we didn't jab enough holes in the spud).

And when the microwave was running, it made lines in the picture on our t.v. We were not amused by that (especially if we were taping something).

Microwave potatoes! Now there's something I haven't done in ages!

I seem to remember the lines on the TV when we ran ours too. Plus other electric equipment would cause it too, like someone vacuuming or using a hair drying in another room. I also remember having to adjust the horizontal hold on our TV alot, because for some reason switching between stations would cause it to go bad. The TV was so large when I was in the back adjusting the horizontal, I couldn't see around it to the front, so I had to have another person there to tell me whether or not the picture was getting fixed. ^_^

LOL. This conversation is so funny! I had a similar conversation with Kid's niece but about downloading music. I was telling her how when I was groung up it was cassettes that were the "in" thing and she just looked at me like I was crazy. :p

Cassettes, yes! Those became the thing just as I was hitting my teen years. Before that it was LPs and 45s, though, and I bought plenty of those while cassettes were still a little too pricey. And in the late 70s, it was 8-tracks that were the big thing! We had a few 8-tracks, but mostly just stuck with the records. LPs, 45s, and as a kid I even had some old 78s I'd gotten from my mother. ^_^

I would bet my entire Marvel comics collection on who your mystery young friend is! LOL!!

The idea of living in your own 'not to distant future' is awesome though! I can't wait until the day I can tell Zoe stories about the 'good old days' when books still came printed on paper and we had to walk with our feet on the ground instead of using HOVER SHOES!!! XD

You win that bet, but you can't have my Age of Apocalypse run :P :P

I don't know about hover shoes (I think I'd end up falling down ALOT), but I think you're not too far off on the books not being printed on paper anymore. What with things like iPad and Kindles becoming more prevalent. I refuse to give up my dusty old tomes, though!
