I thought of her last weekend when I watched The Lives of Others with my parents--I couldn't remember for sure if she'd been from East or West Germany, but if I had to guess I'd say East. (Just looked--yes.) I can't imagine what it must have been like to grow up there, in that sort of profession and with that sort of status. Good lord.

Three of them! One each in 90-91-92. The whole creative team and a good chunk of the cast transitioned to Stars on Ice not long after, so I get the impression the tours were pretty similar. (But of course I will see for myself soon!)
was that the year with Debbie....someone American who won the silver because Witt got the gold?
'88 was Witt versus the American Debi Thomas, who won silver. (Both of them did their freeskates to Carmen.) In '84, Witt also won against American Rosalynn Sumners, but I don't think Boitano was at that Olympics.
That ESPN Nine for IX series did an episode on Witt, actually. It's called The Diplomat. It's currently available to be "saved" on Netflix, so hopefully it'll come out on DVD or instant soon. I've heard mixed reviews about how accurate it is, but it sounds worth watching anyway.
I've heard of The Lives of Others, and been vaguely meaning to watch it. Did you like it?
