Ahahahaha, somehow I have gotten to THE HEAD OF THE LINE for the library's copy of the Hyperbole and a Half book. You know, when it actually comes out in two months. Nevertheless, I am 1 of 1 holds. Eeeeeexcellent.

I just discovered that there actually were TV broadcasts of the Brian Boitano/Katerina Witt tours of 1990-92, and someone online ( Read more... )

Whaaaaaat, the book is actually coming out?? From her posts, I'd assumed that her brain broke again halfway through? I'm so glad it didn't! Or that it unbroke a bit, rather. Yaaaaay, I need to go throw money at her exertions!

I think it broke just enough to make keeping up with the website impossible if she was also doing the book, and the book got first priority. Maybe. That sounds right, anyway. But yes, book! Wheee!

Wow, she's back? I wondered if her bipolar-ness had swung south. Really related to her newest post about depression though, I definitely was going through that in front of you guys my senior year at Kenyon. So, so glad things eventually leveled out.

OMG, there were Boitano/Witt tours?? I think my brain just exploded. I remember watching both of them at the Olympics and I think the only reason I didn't adore Witt was that she wasn't whoever it was I wanted to win (was that the year with Debbie....someone American who won the silver because Witt got the gold? Could be).

I thought of her last weekend when I watched The Lives of Others with my parents--I couldn't remember for sure if she'd been from East or West Germany, but if I had to guess I'd say East. (Just looked--yes.) I can't imagine what it must have been like to grow up there, in that sort of profession and with that sort of status. Good lord.

Three of them! One each in 90-91-92. The whole creative team and a good chunk of the cast transitioned to Stars on Ice not long after, so I get the impression the tours were pretty similar. (But of course I will see for myself soon!)

'88 was Witt versus the American Debi Thomas, who won silver. (Both of them did their freeskates to Carmen.) In '84, Witt also won against American Rosalynn Sumners, but I don't think Boitano was at that Olympics.

That ESPN Nine for IX series did an episode on Witt, actually. It's called The Diplomat. It's currently available to be "saved" on Netflix, so hopefully it'll come out on DVD or instant soon. I've heard mixed reviews about how accurate it is, but it sounds worth watching anyway.

I've heard of The Lives of Others, and been vaguely meaning to watch it. Did you like it?
