Teaching Freshman Composition in GIF form.

All of them are accurate, but I have to say the two for "Introducing myself to the class during my first semester of teaching" and "Introducing myself to the class during my second semester of teaching" (and particularly the difference between them) are spot on. There was notably less oversharing in my ( Read more... )

Srsly! And ugh, now that they've replaced "hanging on to a parent's hand" with these things, the kids just kind of go wherever they want to instead of being redirected out of other people's paths by the parent. Rar.

I was going to say: buy a good pair that fits well, but if you have to work with rentals it's gonna be tough. Make sure they are tight enough in fit (skates should sit much tighter than normal shoes) and tie the laces really tightly. Tight skates improve your control and skating and reduce your foot moving around in the show, which is what in turn losens the laces. My brother plays icehockey, and some of the guys tape the laces (wrap tape around the ankle) but that shouldn't be necessary if you tie them properly and looks ugly, particularly on skating skates.

I wondered if the skate was too big, but it doesn't look like the rentals come in half-sizes--at any rate, I asked for a half size and received the next whole size down--and I don't think I could go down a whole size without seriously crunching my toes. They're already sitting pretty close to the end of the skate already, not quite brushing but very close. (I usually wear an American 6.5 or 7, and I got a size 6 skate. 5 would be itty bitty.) I'm tempted by the taping option, but I imagine the people at the rental counter wouldn't like that...

If I like taking lessons and want to continue, I'll probably buy a decent beginner pair after a few months.

It's a problem with pretty much all athletic type activities, equipment is expensive, and it's not really worth investing unless you know it's something you gonna keep doing for a while. But in order to really get into a sport you need good equipment, so that it's fun, and not just frustrating and discomfort-inducing. Catch 22, alright...
