I finally got around to watching "Blink" (hooray for Netflix's streaming video), and...that was pretty good. Much better than the other two Doctor-lite episdes I've seen. Has it made an entire generation of children scared of statuary

"Blink" is a classic. It's one of the most frightening things I've ever seen, and the amazing thing about it...is that nobody dies. If you think about it, Moffat never kills people. He comes up with much more clever ways to dispose of them, for want of a better word. And that makes them that much more frightening. The two things I've seen that have scared me the most in New Who are this episode, and "The Empty Child"/"The Doctor Dances".

Wouldn't surprise me. Lord knows, I'm still scared of gas masks!

Heh. Very true!

I think TEC/TDD is very slightly scarier than this one, but that may be because I saw it first, and that kind of creepiness isn't as novel with this episode.

Hee. Although I would argue that gas masks are inherently creepier than statues. IMO, making angel statues creepy > making gas masks creepy. :)

I thik TEC/TDD did freak me out a little more, yes. And yeah, I'm not fond of masks of any kind, but gas masks are even more sinister to me now than they were before (I'm the girl who turned around and saw one at The Who Shop three years ago and screamed--before smacking the friend who pointed it out to me!). But for a small chunk of Moffat-y goodness, I don't think you can beat Blink, since it's shorter and it creates SO much of the fear through the merest suggestion. That's why I think it's such genius.

(Damn. Now I should haul that ep out and watch it tonight, in the dark... ;) )

When we first downloaded "Blink," John tried to make me watch it with the lights off. I had to turn them back on halfway through. He still makes fun of me for that.

I wonder how you'll like "Silence in the Library"/"Forest of the Dead." People are killed in a way that actually ups the creep factor.

Heh. To be honest, I never find anything on TV/in movies truly scary at the time; it's the ngiht after, when I'm lying in the dark trying to fall asleep, and my imagination takes over and makes things worse or more personal, that things get frightning. But now I totally want to freak out my future students with this episode--it will of course be watched in a dark viewing room in the library at night. :D

Hmmm. Well, I think it will be a while until I get to it, but I'll keep that in mind.

ah, "Blink." I love that one. For me it was totally scarier than TEC/TDD. When watching TEC/TDD, I was too distracted by my early Doctor/Rose mania, looking out for all the bits that could be shippy, and also I found the plot exciting and clever rather than scary. But Blink was good at that 'don't look over behind you'/'don't look away' thing that's always very creepy for me.

And then with SitL/FotD I was back to thinking 'ooh, clever' slightly creeped out but mainly, 'ooh, clever.'

I just love how eminently quoteable the Moffat episodes are. For seasons 2 and 3 the Moffat eps are some of the few I go back and rewatch on perpous rather than just coming accross them on sci-fi channel.

Indeed, Moffat eps are by far the best of them. (They might even be the only ones worth watching...)

ah, now I don't know about that. I still think season one is very good, and there are bits and peices of 2 and 3 I go back and love each time (Human Nature/Family of Blood and School Reunion to name a couple) and season 4 is pretty wonderful because of having Donna. And I'm having a lot of fun working my way through the Classic stuff too.

But I don't ever think of it as anything more than great fun with lots of running and aliens. And some rather lovely ships, like Four/Romana. It may be a question of expectations.

Oh, I do like Old Skool Who. It's just the new stuff I'm not as into.
