I have no idea who Bierstadt is, so I reckon it's a bit of an obscure reference, but from the context, it's pretty clear it's an artist of some kind who makes paintings like what you described.

I didn't get the reference, but I checked out your link and loved the paintings. So I say leave it in, definitely--those who are curious will google Bierstadt and learn something. Some of us consider that one of the bonus joys of reading. *g*

Bierstadt is awesome. I know critics called it a cheap way to make a statement, but I love those giant, 15x25' or whatever canvases. Soooo awesome.
