agree with you about the criticism of Obama, definitely.

two quibbles, though. 1) ethanol takes more oil to produce than gasoline. it's not yet a viable alternative.

2) apparently, one of the reasons BP took their time before getting serious about shutting down the well is that they were trying to _save_ it! i don't blame Obama for this, but it's pretty appalling. they were hoping they might be able to use the well in the future to keep extracting oil, so they delayed using methods that risked destroying the well permanently. but i agree that the whole situation is complex & confusing, precluding obvious, immediate responses from the president. and to make things worse, BP has way more resources in terms of engineers and equipment, so the gov't was/is really dependent on them to mobilize those resources in the best way possible.

Do you know of a decent article on the production of corn "gasahol"? I've been curious why it was discounted, since I understood it could be made like alcohol & only requires a tiny modification for most cars. I would love to know more!

heh heh heh; save the well... figures!

At least in quick internet poking, I can't find a decent two-sided article on ethanol. I will say that as a horticulturalist, I do know that much of the issue involves fertilizing the corn. Chemical fertilizers are made from petroleum, and corn needs a WHOLE lot of it.

I'll keep looking for a good article, but that is a good part of the issue right there.

I do agree with your points about public reaction. Personally, I would like to see my government work slowly and deliberately with thought and not just quick public rage driven reaction. I feel that the lack of investigation and the abundance of assumption has gotten us into a number of our problems, and I will never fault a president for taking the time to gather solid information before making a decision.

What ever happened to good, old-fashioned bull-shit?
If it's good enough for TV, it must be good enough for corn, right?

I have posted a bit of ranting about this on my FB. (yes welcome back to lj 009) anyways, i really like what u sed hur. and i kno. i feel like i almost get defensive for obama because i believe in him so much and i realize what a crazy task the spill is and that coupled with the economy that he was handed... well i think he's doing his best and i respect him for it and i think that people should chill out about obama.
wat's sad is it's probly hard for americans to chill out because our trust was so fucked up by bush that it's gunna take a lot for anyone after to gain it back quickly. i think americans are just really wounded from bush still so they frenzy at every little thing. it's hella dumb. hugs to u!

So true; I think you hit the nail on the head about everyone being wounded. It's sad... :(
