yeah...Amazon.ca was one of the places I checked. Unfortunately it's availability is listed as "Ships in 2 to 5 weeks" - which means it's not in stock and needs to be brought in from their supplier. That made me a bit nervous about placing an order through them.
I actually have a friend who works for Disney distributing games and DVD's and we were discussing this just the other day.
The unfortunate truth is, Ghibli DVD's really don't sell well. Especially here in the states. They've tried a number of different tactics, including special edition box sets and promotions, but they can't get rid of them. Thus why they are discontinuing making some of them. They may do a vault kind of thing with them, like they do with Disney films, but it's highly unlikely. Especially since the rumor going around is that Ponyo is the last of Miyazaki's films and he is now retiring. We'll see if it's true, but that's the way it currently stands. Boo.
I can definitely understand them discontinuing making some of them if they're not selling well. But what I don't understand is why, of all the Ghibli titles to choose, they'd select Totoro as the first to stop making. If it were me, I would've started with titles like Whispers of the Heart, Pocco Rosso, My Neighbors the Yamadas....the lesser known titles.
My guess? It was the first one to actually sell out and they still have too many copies of the others. That's just a guess, but it still makes much suckage. From what John said it sounds like they've actually stopped making all of them, and are just running through their stock at this point. People don't know what they're missing.

Totoro is $27, but that's still better than the normal $39 per Miyazaki DVD.
