City of Bones is another Urban Fantasy set for young adults, refreshingly *not* told under the first person as most urban fantasy is. As with most urban fantasy it begins with a girl (yes apparently urban fantasy thrives on mostly female leads) Clary finding out that she can see the otherworld

NOPE. Now I'm curious. So I'm off hunting. What is the story behind the author?

Oh, but I knew she was a BNF for Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter (mostly Harry Potter) because of the blurb in the back of the book.

There's a whole world of wank surrounding her, and here is probably the best way to start. :P

I'd recommend the book because it's a good read. But there are some issues that might not be for everybody (large issue storyline spoilers) and I don't know you well enough in that sense to guage if you'll get offended or not. So try the first book. I can see why she made it big in fanfiction. If you don't like how it went the first book is great enough without reading through the second or the third.
