Summary: Hotch surprises Reid

**

“Plant a seed of friendship;
reap a bouquet of happiness.”
- Lois L. Kaufman.

March 6th, 2010
Reid´s apartment, Saturday 6:15 pm

Reid had just gotten comfortable on his couch with a thick soft cover of A History of Western Philosophy, a book he needed to read for his philosophy study, when a rapid knock on the door startled him. Quickly getting up, he peeked through the window, seeing a smiling Hotch and a bouncing Jack on the other side.

“Hotch, hi,” Reid said as he opened the door, but almost stumbled backward as his leg was assaulted by Jack.

“Hi, Spencer, we are taking you out to dinner,” Jack announced with a bright smile.

“You are?” Reid gave Hotch a confused look.

“If you´re not busy or have any plans,” Hotch said and smiled.

Reid gave him a small smile back before looking down at Jack, carefully untangling him from his leg. “No, no plans, I was just going to order a pizza later.”

“Pizza! Dad, can we have pizza?” Jack looked hopeful at his father.

“Don´t you think Spencer should choose since we´re taking him out?”

“Actually, pizza does sound really good,” Reid replied and smiled at Jack who bounced with excitement. “Let me just get my things,” Reid said.

He pulled his coat and messenger bag from the hook behind the door and put on his loafers. At the last minute, he walked inside and grabbed the book of the living room table and put it in his bag.

He locked door behind him and walked with the two Hotchners down the hallway. To his surprise, Jack thrust his small hand into his. Reid´s long fingers closed around the delicate palm and the softness of the child´s skin felt warm against his.

At Pizza Hut, Reid shared a large pepperoni pizza with Hotch while Jack got a kid´s meal. Hotch´d asked for seats close to the play area and Jack happily occupied himself there while he waited for the two adults to finish their pizza.

Hotch told Reid stories from his time as a lawyer and how he went from a prosecutor to a field-agent in Seattle. In return, Reid told stories from his time at Cal-Tech; of chemistry experiments gone wrong and out of control robots.

“I want ice cream.” Jack had snuck up on them in a middle of shared laughter.

“Be polite, Jack,” Hotch reminded the child gently.

“Can I have some ice cream?” Jack looked at his father who looked back with a small smile. “Please,” Jack finally added.

“Sure,” Hotch told him before looking at Reid, “Spencer?”

“Yeah,” Reid answered quickly with a smile. He really liked when Hotch called him Spencer, even if the thought of calling him Aaron was just... unfitting.

On the way home, Reid didn´t dare to say a word when Hotch steered the car toward his apartment instead of Reid´s. He just gave him a curious glance before smiling at something Jack said. This was a good evening, Reid thought, his stomach was full and he was in good company. He relaxed into the passenger seat and sighed with a content smile.

“Come on, buddy, bedtime,” Hotch told Jack when they entered the apartment. Reid got settled on the couch and drew up his book while Hotch went through the bedtime routine with his son. He didn´t hear the small feet running into the living room and gave a small squeak of surprise when Jack jumped on the couch and wrapped his arms around his neck, all he could do was awkwardly hug the child back.

“Can you read to me?” Jack asked and then gazed at his father who´d followed his son. “Please?”

Hotch smiled reassuringly when Reid looked at him for answer. “Okay,” Reid answered and let Jack drag him into his bedroom. He didn´t know what to do but Jack handed him a small book and crawled up into the bed.

“You have to tuck me in, “Jack told him and Reid pulled the sheets back and waited until Jack had leaned back on the pillows to place them over the small body.

“Now you sit here.” Jack pointed to the spot next to him and Reid sat promptly where he was required. Jack snuggled against him and Reid carefully set his arm around his shoulders. When the book had been read, Reid slowly made his way out of the bed and headed for the door.

“No, wait, you have to give me a good night-hug,” Jack claimed, quickly climbed out of the bed and attacked Spencer´s leg. Slowly Reid crouched down and awkwardly set his arms around the small shoulders, only to have small arms wrap around his neck and hug tight.

“Uhhh, good night, Jack,”

“Good night, Spencer,”

Hotch poked his head in just as Reid was untangling himself from Jack. With a grin Hotch picked up his son and tucked him into the bed.

“Good night, buddy,” Hotch whispered and placed a small kiss on the forehead of the child. Reid felt awkward witnessing the love that shone from Hotch at the little gesture. He occupied himself by putting the book away and digging his hands into his pockets, letting his eyes wander around the room at anything except the bed.

“Good night, daddy.” Jack closed his eyes and turned on his side with a content smile on his face.

Hotch turned on a small nightlight on a dresser in the corner before beckoning Reid outside and switching off the overhead light as he exited the room.

“He really likes you,” Hotch said smiling and walked past him in the hallway.

“Yeah,” Reid replied thoughtfully as he trailed behind, “Although, I´m not sure why.”

“Spence, the most important thing you can give children is attention, understanding, and a feeling of being safe and loved,” Hotch grabbed two wineglasses off the kitchen counter and a bottle of red wine, he´d apparently opened while Reid was reading for Jack, and headed for the living room. “You give Jack all of these things.”

Taking a seat on the couch, Reid tucked his feet under himself as he accepted a glass of wine from Hotch. “I don´t know.” Reid said thoughtfully, “It´s easy to follow his train of thought and I try not to use big words when I´m around him.”

“And he knows about your intelligence because when he gives up on my explanations it´s always: ´I´m going to ask Spencer.´” Hotch said with a chuckle and leaned back into the couch.

Pride swelled in Reid´s chest. He hid his smile by looking down and letting his hair hide his face.

“How´s your BA in philosophy coming along?” Hotch asked and sipped his wine.

“Good,” Reid said, glad for the distraction, “I hope to finish the paper at the end of next semester.”

Hotch looked at him with raised eyebrows, “You know you´re welcome to take some time off to finish it.”

Shaking his head, Reid smiled shyly, “The study is a good balance with work. It keeps my mind off the BAU.”

“And have you thought what you´re going to do after the BA?”

“I can´t seem to decide between a doctorate in philosophy and a BA in physics. What do you think?”

Hotch chuckled. “I have no idea, you could probably finish both if you wanted.”

“I don´t know,” Reid said deep in thought, his hand flying through the air as he explained. “Garcia said it would be more practical to finish the doctorate before jumping into a new course, but with my background it would be natural to go straight to physics.”

“She has a point, but in your case, I don´t think it would matter. You remember everything you want to remember.”

“And then some,” Reid added quietly.

“Did you ever want to become something other than a profiler?” Hotch asked curiously.

“Actually, I had no idea what I wanted to be. I think my professors were hoping I would follow in their shoes,” Reid looked at Hotch before adding, “All six of them.”

Hotch chuckled.

“But then Gideon approached me at Cal-Tech and… you know the rest,” Reid said with ease.

“Did he paint a pretty picture of the BAU?”

“No, he told me the BAU needed me?”

Hotch looked at him with surprise. “That´s it?”

Reid smiled softly. “Yeah, he knew exactly what I wanted to hear and told me.”

“He profiled you.” Hotch nodded knowingly and refilled their glasses.

“Yeah.”

“It doesn´t matter what you say or what rules are set, we always end up profiling the people around us,” Hotch said almost sadly.

“Occupational hazard,” Reid said shyly.

Hotch laughed and rested his head on the back of the couch, “Yeah, a major one.”

Reid wasn´t sure if it was the wine or the company, but Aaron´s laughter (when had the name started to fit?) made his stomach heavy with excitement. He realized he´d been staring at the other man´s profile when Hotch suddenly turned his head and looked at him. He quickly averted his eyes, settling them on the wineglass in his hand, but he couldn´t help the color that appeared in his cheeks.

Untangling himself from the comfortable corner of the couch, he set the glass on the table as he stood up. “I… aaammm… have to… ummm… go,” Reid stammered and stumbled with putting his book back into his bag as he made his way past the couch.

Any minute now, Hotch was going to call him on his stupidity.

“Spencer!”

Who the hell fell for their bosses now days anyway? Stupid, stupid, stupid.

“Spencer!”

He needed to remember something, what was it? Something he had to do? Ah, call a cab. Reid frantically looked in his bag for his cell as he headed for the door. Where was that thing when you needed it the most? Finally his fingers touched the hard plastic and he quickly pulled it out and dialed the number.

A hand wrapped around his upper arms just as he was about to hit send.

“Reid.” Hotch´s voice was soft. “Please, stop.”

Reid´s breath caught, unsure of anything but his thumping heart. His instincts told him to move so he took one step backwards and Hotch instantly let him go. He couldn´t look at him, couldn´t face the shame and the horror that Hotch must be displaying.

“Spencer, look at me,” Hotch asked quietly.

Shaking his head, Spencer really didn´t want to face his boss right now and see the… disgust.

A palm came into his vision. Spencer tensed and closed his eyes, preparing himself for the touch. Fingers carefully pushed his chin up; Spence kept his eyes firmly closed.

Hotch let out a low chuckle and then soft lips were set against his. Reid froze as another mellow kiss was planted on his lips before moving away. Reid opened his eyes and bluntly stared at his boss.

“Do I have your attention now?” Hotch asked lightly with a smile.

Reid swallowed and nodded, his tongue darting out to lick his lips to see if he could taste Aaron there.

“I´m… You…” Aaron stammered before smiling and shaking his head. “I´m very much out of practice.”

Aaron returned his gaze to Reid, searching his face for something and Spencer waited, nervous and unsure.

“Tell me I´m not wrong about this,” Aaron finally said.

It took Spencer a few seconds to realize what Aaron had said and what it meant. As soon as his mind had processed the thought, he quickly took the step that separated them, his hand finding the back of Aaron´s neck so he could easily pull him closer and with sudden force he crushed their lips together. A low growl escaped from Aaron as he met the sudden onslaught with fierceness. It was wet and messy and hard breathing. Someone whimpered when their tongues finally crashed together, touching, searching, finding and learning.

Aaron´s hand threaded through Spencer´s curls only to tilt his head to gain better access as the other hand snug around his waist, forcibly bringing their bodies together. Spencer felt his slacks become too tight as his groin sprang to life.

He was trying to comprehend and process the thought that he was actually standing in Aaron´s living room, kissing him like there was not breathe left on earth, but all sense seemed to have abandoned Spencer. He pulled away and drew much needed air into his lungs and Aaron immediately loosened his firm grip he had around Spencer´s waist.

Nuzzling the crook of Aaron´s neck, he inhaled, letting Aaron fill all his senses, coffee, shaving cream and just a hint of aftershave. Under his fingers, muscles flexed as he planted a small kiss on the jugular, feeling the steady beat under his lips, darting his tongue as he moved up the neck, hearing Aaron miss a breath as salty sweat teased his taste buds, small nibbles along the jaw, his teeth carefully scraping against the five o´clock shadow until he finally found his destination, the parted and inviting lips of the strong man.

The exploration was slower this time, taking their time to become in sync, familiarize themselves with each other. Aaron tightened his hold again and through their dresspants Spencer could feel a hint of hardness matching his own.

Aaron broke the kiss but didn´t move away. He ran his eyes over Spencer´s face, caressing the younger man´s cheek softly with his fingers. “You should go,” he whispered.

Wait?! What?! NOW he was sending him away. “Why?” Spencer asked with confusion.

“If you don´t go, this will lead to something we´ll both regret,” Aaron told him and gave him a small kiss before setting his arms around him.

Uhhmmm, wasn´t that a good thing? Spencer shook his head against Aaron´s shoulder. He didn´t get what Aaron was talking about.

“I don´t want to move this fast, you deserve better,” Aaron whispered into his ear.

Spencer relaxed his fingers, letting the back of Aaron´s shirt go from his grip as Hotch moved away from him. He felt cold when the warm body left his.

“You´re being oddly quiet,” Aaron said and gave him a small nervous smile.

“Sorry.” Spencer hid his blushing face, his hand nervously pushing his hair behind his ear as he wasn´t sure how to proceed from there.

“Spencer, what do you want?” Aaron asked and carefully set his hand against Spencer´s upper arm.

You, everything, all of it. “I don´t know. What do you want?” He asked, digging his hands into his pockets.

“I want to do this right and see where it goes,” Aaron said sensibly.

“Yeah, that sounds good. Lets do that,” Spencer said and rocked on his heals as he sent Hotch a small smile.

Aaron watched him for a few seconds before smiling back.
