So while I was on vacation, I read Talking from 9 to 5 by Deborah Tannen. It discusses men and women's speech in the work environment, and specifically different speaking styles which create an impression of a huge gender gap. Thanks for your input.

I've read about cases where fluent Japanese speakers, while perfectly-well understood on the phone, are never understood in person, because a Westerner cannot possibly be able to speak Japanese, so a Japanese person talking to them will assume that they cannot possibly be speaking Japanese.

And yeah, there are so many aspects of Japanese language, philosophies of speaking, so to speak, that Japanese people assume non-natives absolutely cannot understand.

And as you said, the racism doesn't just go one way, unfortunately. And it's sad and it's frustrating and it's good to know but it's something you just wish you didn't have to think about. Sigh.

(And I am totally with you on the "omg it's a girl" reveals. OMG SAMUS IS A WOMAN?!)
