To avoid people seeing hurtful things that are posted about them, mostly.

When I started doing it, it was because my two best friends hated each other, so if one saw the other's comment (regardless of the topic) they'd refuse to comment, themself.

So, if they can't see those comments... They won't have a reason to not comment, themself.
