Or perhaps we read that one crossover that does it so well, we want to try it.
I think that's exactly it. Fandom is interactive, and very few of us are sufficiently insular to sit around only reading a narrow profile of what's initially interesting to us--that would be like going to an infinitely long buffet and only eating the Jello salad. Instead we gradually branch out to things our friends rec, things that sound intriguing, things that are insufficiently tagged but then turn out to be so awesome you don't care...we read it all, and constantly revise our tastes.
One fan's "pointless muddying" is another fan's exploration of canon!teenygozerApril 21 2010, 15:32:58 UTC
It's true, my fav stories for SGA seem to be AUs (both the "slight change" and "entirely new universe" styles) and crossovers. I don't recall many crossovers in my previous fandom, Smallville, but I adored the "slight change" AUs (so Lex didn't have to become this evil supervillain). And I have to say, I can't really recall any SV stories where they're coffee barristas or own book stores or whatever. I agree with you, it's an SGA thing. Maybe it's because SGA's characters are Just These Guys, You Know(tm), rather than larger-than-life superheroes or extremely wed to their situation or jobs. You can see them as dentists or cops, without changing their essential nature, or interacting with NCIS or the people from Star's Hollow (Gilmore Girls). Or, you know, ice skaters! ;)
Thank you for working to get more SGA into your story, as an SGA fan (and not an SPN fan), I appreciate it. Of course I'll read it no matter how it turns out, but THANK YOU anyway!
I started reading/writing fandom in the very narrow canon world but didn't stay there very long. I find the most enjoyable pieces are the ones that stretch boundaries...sometimes stretch them past where they're even recognizable as the canon product! AU's and some crossovers now make up the bulk of my stored fanfiction and all of what little I write!
I've never seen SPN, just the bits that one gets in channel surfing. I will no doubt be at a loss to understand your "ficlet" but I'm still looking forward to reading it!
It seems to me that some characters work well in AUs or crossovers. SGA is one of those shows that works well. The personalities of these characters are those we see every day.
SGA works even better than SG1 as an au.
I remember when both Starsky and Hutch and the Professionals were big in fandom. The Pros characters could be popped in to any AU or crossover with no problem. But S&H did not work well with others.
Also imho after I have read all the pure fiction in a fandom you need something else and that is where AUs and crossovers come in.
1,000-word Help Haiti ficlet now approaching 10,000 words....
Wow! Nice short little fic. I'm sure it will be appreciated greatly. :)
I don't remember when I got into AUs and crossovers. It probably happened when somebody crossed a fandom I liked with another that I liked. So my little fanish heart went 'Whee!'. SGA seems to work well with the odd. It certainly can take the crack! (Oh, crackfic, how I love your cracktastik-ness.)
