Ha, that is interesting. When I was last in Russia I employed my usual method of smiling at anyone with whom I made eye contact (it's just instinctive at this point) and most people looked baffled or hostile in response. I ended up having a conversation with a Russian who told me that smiling at strangers is considered a sign of lunacy or stupidity. I can't help it though!
