There is truth in these words.

I've come to the conclusion that Cook obfuscated the names for two reasons. Firstly, his chronology is off for dramatic effects. For example, the mamlukes are in control of Egypt during the sack of Béziers, which historically happened decades before they took power.

More importantly, he has Roman Catholic cardinals and Islamic caliphs practicing sorcery---and makes it quite clear they're deluding themselves by believing their god to be anything more than an unusually powerful boogeyman.

I can only imagine the hate mail if he'd left the names intact.
