I did one really like that exact I used pancetta with the onion rather than ham after and added an egg yolk with some cream - so more carbonara ish. But yes goes well with asparagus. ( Though I am beginning to wonder if there is any point to asparagus except traditionally steamed with butter or Mayo or hollandaise. If it's just A N Other green veg to be fried in , leeks are cheaper and possibly tastier...
