“Good Morning Arts Funding, Ianto Jones speaking can I help you?”
“Ianto, it’s Rhi.”
“Rhi, what have I told you about ringing me at work?”
“I know little brother, but this is an emergency, I wouldn’t ring if it wasn’t important.”
“What’s wrong, has something happened to mam?”
“No, no, nothing like that. I need you to do me a favour.”
“Rhi! For heavens’ sake, couldn’t this have waited until I got home, I’ve got work to do.”
“I’m sorry Ianto, I wouldn’t ask if there was anyone else. Please Ianto….”
Ianto sighed, he knew what was coming, his sister wanted him to run her around again. Johnny had decided that they would be better off without a car, it was costing too much, but he hadn’t thought about how to get his wife and kids around. No, that was now Ianto’s job. “Go on then, what is it this time?”
“Oh Ianto, you’re a lifesaver. Mica has an ice skating lesson, I can get her there but I’ve got an extra shift at work, Johnny’s away on a long haul, I just need you to pick her up and take her to mam’s. She’s going to look after her tonight. Please Ianto, I’ll be forever grateful.”
“Go on then, how can I refuse my gorgeous niece the pleasure of my company?”
“Oh thanks Ianto, you’re a life saver.”
“Mmm, just don’t make a habit of it.”
“Great, see you later.”
“Erm Rhi, I said I’d pick her up, but a time would be good.”
“Oh sorry….she finishes at 6.30, is that ok?”
“Sure, no problem. I’ll go straight to the leisure centre from here, I could do with a swim, so I’ll hang around after that then go to the rink.”
“Oh Ianto, I owe you one.”
“I’m keeping score Rhi.” He laughed and hung up.
Ianto had worked for Cardiff Council for the last four years. He’d worked his way up from office assistant in the Arts Funding Department to the Director of Finance in charge of deciding who was eligible for Council funding. He’d been in his current position for the last six months. He enjoyed his job and working for the council had its perks. He could use any of the facilities at any of the leisure centres free of charge. He didn’t mind picking his niece up, she was a great girl and he didn’t get to see her very often. The swim would do him good. He’d been neglecting his exercise routine for the last few weeks, he’d been so busy at work all he’d wanted to do was go home and relax in front of the TV watching his favourite Bond films.
He was smiling when there was a knock at the door. “Come in.” His grin got wider when his friend and colleague walked in. “Hey Tosh, what can I do for you?”
“Just wanted to know if you felt like going for a drink tonight after work?”
“Sorry, if you’d have asked me about 15 minutes ago I’d have said yes, but I’ve just promised Rhi I’d pick Mica up from her ice skating lesson. So I’m off for a swim then to the rink.”
“Oh ok, maybe another night?”
“Sounds good, thanks Tosh. Hey how’s things with you and Tommy?”
“Great thanks. He’s so good for me. I was a bit of a mess after Owen, I know you tried to tell me what he was like. I should have listened to you. But….water under the bridge, and I really like Tommy.”
“Good for you. You deserve some happiness.”
“Hey what about you? Have you found anyone yet?”
“Nope, don’t think I’m looking either. I really got burned with Lisa, so I’m staying single thanks.”
“Ianto you should get back out there. You’re young, cute, what girl wouldn’t want to be with you? Hey if I were single I’d go out with you.” They smiled.
“Thanks Tosh, maybe in a few months when I’ve got her out of my system. I really loved her you know? I was going to propose then she did that to me. It really knocked my confidence for six.”
“Hey you were too good for her. It’s nothing you did so don’t go blaming yourself. I hope she’s really happy with….what did they call her?”
“Anji, I often wondered if it was something I did?”
“No Ianto it wasn’t. She was using you, so stop thinking like that. You’ll find someone you’ve just got to get out more.”
“I go to the gym, swimming and I play squash. I’m meeting people. Just not many females, not yet anyway.”
“And you’ll not meet any picking your niece up. Or maybe you will. Maybe….” She grinned, “maybe there’ll be some young woman taking her sister skating or even the teacher, maybe she’s single!”
“Oh Tosh, you’ve got an answer for everything. When I find someone I’ll be sure to let you know. Then maybe you’ll stop harassing me!” He got up from behind his desk to go and hug his best friend.
“Hey I’m only looking out for you.”
“Yeah, I know. Don’t worry I’m fine. Now, I’ve got some letters to sign before I disappear tonight. Thanks for asking me to the pub, but I’ll be fine. Now….Miss Sato, go do what you’re brilliant at, and get us some more sponsorship for the Drama Festival that’s coming up.”
Tosh squeezed his hand, kissed his cheek and left him to get on with his work. Maybe he would find someone at skating she hoped so.
Ianto left his office promptly at five and went straight to the leisure centre on Ty Glas Avenue. He always kept gym and swimming gear in his car. He used to go to the leisure centre every night, but had recently stopped. Maybe Rhi had just given him the nudge he needed to get going again.
He smiled as he looked through the window of the rink and saw Mica, concentration on her face, trying to attempt a jump. He didn’t want to disturb her, so went straight to the changing rooms for the pool. Checking his watch he saw he had just over an hour before his niece finished her lesson.
He was whistling to himself as he got changed. He realised he hadn’t felt so at ease for a very long time. It dawned on him whilst he’d been talking to Tosh earlier that he was probably finally over Lisa and he had got her out of his system. Yeah Jones, you can do better than her, there are plenty of single women out there for you. You just need to go out more. He laughed to himself as he made his way to the pool.
Sliding into the water he checked the time on the pool clock, 5.40, if he gave himself until 6.20 that would give him enough time to change and get to the ice rink for 6.30. Mica probably wouldn’t be out on time, he knew that she had friends here so she’d no doubt be talking to them.
He set himself a target of 25 lengths. It had been a while, but he felt that was a doable amount without tiring himself out. As he was swimming he began to think more about what Tosh had said. Yeah he did need to start going out, he’d been in his house on his own for way too long. Maybe there was someone out there for him. What had Tosh said? He was young, she thought he was good looking. He smiled at the thought of Tosh going out with him. No, as much as he loved her as a friend, he didn’t want to spoil that friendship. Anyway she’d got Tommy now. Ianto had warned her about Owen, but she’d not believed him. He hadn’t pushed the fact that Owen Harper had a reputation as a womaniser, he didn’t want to lose her friendship. But it wasn’t long till she found out for herself. She’d gone home from work ill and found Owen in bed with his secretary Gwen.
Ianto had been a shoulder for Tosh to cry on as she’d been a shoulder for him when he’d found Lisa, arms draped around another woman passionately kissing her, when she was supposed to be meeting him for a romantic meal. He’d left the restaurant, packed his bags, waited for her to arrive home. After confronting her he’d left and told her to have a good life. He’d tried to put a brave face on it but Tosh had got the whole story out of him and had been there when he hit rock bottom.
Yep he was definitely over Lisa now. Looking up at the clock he realised it was 6.15, he’d done 20 lengths so rather than be late picking Mica up he got out. As he was making his way to the changing room he bumped into Rhys.
“Ianto, hi, how are you?”
“Fine Rhys thanks, don’t very often see you here.”
“No, I’ve decided I need to get fit. I’ve finished with Gwen, you know after that Owen thing. Good luck to them I say. Anyway I’m done feeling sorry and need to get back out there.”
“Yeah I know what you mean.”
“Look Ianto, what say we meet for a drink sometime?”
“I can’t stop right now, I’m picking Mica up from her skating lesson, and if I don’t get a move on Rhi will tell me off for forgetting her.”
“Ok, no worries I’ll see you at work sometime.”
“Sure, see you.” Ianto rushed through to the changing room, he glanced at the clock, noticing he only had a couple of minutes to get changed. He liked Rhys, he’d known him a few months. He worked in the Transport Office at the council and it had been his girlfriend whom Tosh had found with Owen.
Jack Harkness had been teaching for the last five years, he’d wanted to pass on his extensive knowledge of skating and he loved working with kids. He’d grown up watching championship skaters on the television and had told his parents that’s what he wanted to do. They’d laughed at him at first but had taken him to the local rink, not really believing he’d carry on with his whim. Several years later, several gold medals under his belt from the World and European Championships he’d entered the Olympics and won bronze, behind Brian Boitano and Brian Orser. He realised then that he’d achieved his goal of entering the Olympics, and given up skating.
After a while he found he missed the ice, so decided to train as a teacher. Jack loved his job and took great pleasure in passing his knowledge on. He’d trained a couple who had gone on to win the British title and had one, maybe two, students who could probably go as far if not further.
He’d just finished his lessons for the day and decided that he needed to relax. His way of relaxing was to go for a swim. Picking up his bag he made his way to the changing rooms.
As he walked in his breath was taken away, stood in front of him taking clothes out of a locker, was the most gorgeous man he’d seen in a very long time. The guy had brown hair that because it was wet, clung to the back of his neck. His back was toned, making his way down the body Jack noticed a tight arse in the swimming trunks. Wow Jack, now he’s hot! He smiled to himself, something had just been awoken in him, something that he thought he’d never feel again, not after Hart.
He’d met Hart when he’d been competing and they’d started off as friends, then it had grown into what Jack thought was a loving relationship. Things turned sour when Jack began training for the Olympics, his schedule was such that as he was going out, John was coming in. In the end it came down to jealousy on Harts part, he’d even accused Jack of having an affair, so Jack did the only thing he thought was right and ended it. Hart had not really argued, telling him that although their sex was fantastic, all Jack loved was his skating. Hart had been gone when Jack got home that night, leaving a note telling him he hoped he liked being on his own, because that’s all the ever would be whilst he was skating.
Jack looked up and down the young man’s body again. Feeling a stirring below his waist he took several deep breaths to calm himself down. He just hoped the young man wouldn’t turn around too soon and notice the reaction he was having.
Ianto sense there was someone behind him and turned to see who it was, coming face to face with the most gorgeous blue grey eyes he’d ever seen.
Jack held his breath as the young man turned, he found himself staring into the most beautiful crystal blue eyes he’d ever seen.
Ianto smiled “hi, erm, sorry if I’m in your way. Excuse me.” He quickly walked past Jack and entered a cubicle. Closing the door he leant up against it, taking deep breaths what the hell is going on Ianto? He felt something react, looking down he saw the start of an arousal, shit Ianto what are you thinking? But he couldn’t help it, he found he couldn’t stop thinking about those gorgeous eyes.
Jack made his way to a cubicle, closing the door he pressed his back up against it. Come on Jack, calm down, he’s gonna think…. What’s he going to think? He felt his trousers getting tighter at the front. Reaching down he felt the beginnings of an arousal. He palmed his hand over it, took several deep breaths and closed his eyes, thinking all the while that he needed to find out who the gorgeous young man with the beautiful blue eyes was.
Ianto quickly dried himself, he had to pick Mica up. Looking at himself again his reaction was subsiding, he couldn’t let Mica or any of her friends see what was happening. Why was he having this reaction? What had that man done? Nothing! But those eyes, they were gorgeous. Who was he? Ianto had not seen the man before, but then he’d not been here for a while. Stop thinking about him you’ve got to pick your niece up. Ianto took a deep breath, whilst the door was still closed he reached a hand down, the reaction had subsided again. He made a mental note not to think of that man again. For goodness sake he’d just ended a relationship with a woman.
Picking his wet clothes up, he made his way back to the ice rink. As he approached the rink he saw Mica talking to a girl and her mother. When she saw him she said a hasty goodbye to her friend and ran over to him.
“Uncle Ianto, what are you doing here? Where’s mam?”
“She’s working an extra shift and your dad’s on a long haul so….you’ve got me. Is that ok?”
“That’s brilliant, I don’t get to see you much, how are you?”
“All the better for seeing my favourite niece” They laughed. “I was watching you earlier, you looked as though you were about to do a jump.”
“Oh Uncle Ianto you don’t know much do you. That was a toe loop, the Captain was teaching us all that today. I’ve not done it before and the Captain said I did really well.”
“That’s great, but who’s the Captain?”
“Oh he’s our teacher, he used to compete in the Olympics but he’s teaching now. Hey you’ll have to come pick me up again and you can see how brilliant he is.” She continued to chat about the Captain as they made their way home, Ianto smiling at how animated his niece got when she was telling him how fantastic this guy was. Well Mica it looks like you’ve got a crush on your teacher.
Jack made his way into the pool wondering who the young man had been. He wanted to know more about him, who he was, how often did he swim here? Stop it Jack he’s not going to be interested in you, he’s got to be straight….hasn’t he?
Jack decided that he would keep a look out for the young man. He was pleased he was in the water, he’d become hard again. He smiled to himself realising that for the first time for a very long time there was another purpose in his life other than skating.
