Jack took an instant dislike to Mark.  He didn’t know what it was but he seemed distant, not at all concerned whether Ianto was attempting the exercises correctly or not.  He made a mental note to ask Owen about him.

“Ok Mr Jones, let’s go over to the weights.”

“But I did those yesterday, I was supposed to be in the pool this afternoon.”

“I’m not bothered what you were doing with Jacqui, you’re with me now and you’ll do as I say.”

Jack had heard this conversation and didn’t like it.  “Yan my love, will you be ok for a couple of minutes, I’ve just remembered a phone call I have to make.”

“Yeah, sure Jack, no problem.  I’ll still be here when you get back.”

Jack needed to speak to Owen, now.  He really had a bad feeling about this guy.  He knew he shouldn’t, he was only doing what he thought best.  But something was niggling him.

He kissed him then left the room and found a phone at the nurses station.  Flashing his eyes and smile at the nurse, she allowed him to ring Owen.

“Doctor Harper, what can I do for you?”

“Owen, it’s Jack.”

“Hey Jack, what’s wrong?”

“Can you come up to physio I need you to see something.”

“Can it wait half an hour, I’ve got a meeting that is....”

“No Owen it can’t wait it’s urgent.”

“Jack calm down.  Look, let me make a call, I’ll postpone the meeting.  Is something the matter with Jacqui?”

“She’s not in today, Ianto’s got this guy called Mark.  He says Jacqui’s fathers’ ill and she’s....”

“Jack get back to Ianto, Jacqui’s father died eight years ago.  I’m on my way.”

Jack slammed the phone down.  “Call the police” he shouted at the nurse as he raced back into the physio room, just as Ianto was about to lift more weights.  Jack noticed the cable on the left hand side didn’t look right.  “IANTO!  Don’t lift anymore.”

Ianto looked questioningly at Jack as Mark looked up and saw him running across the room.

Mark tried to make an escape through the office as Owen emerged through the door and ran straight into him.

Owen managed to tackle him to the ground as Jack appeared at his side.  Ianto couldn’t understand what was going on as he saw Owen climb off Mark and Jack pull the guy to his feet.

“Ok who sent you?”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about, I work here.”

“Don’t give me that, I know all of the physiotherapists and you, my friend do not work here.” Owen shouted.

Jack demanded “where’s Jacqui?”

“I told you she’s gone to see....”

“Yeah, her father who’s ill, right?  Must be difficult considering he’s dead!”

Jack pushed Mark up against the wall.  “He sent you didn’t he?”

“Who.  I don’t know who you’re talking about.  I keep telling you I work here.”

Owen went closer to the man and calmly said “I’ve just told you I know everyone in this department, you tell us who sent you and I’ll get the police to go easy on you.  Don’t tell us and they will get it out of you but won’t be as understanding as me.  Got that?”

The duty nurse put her head round the door “Doctor, the police are outside waiting, what shall I tell them?”

“I’ll be out in a minute, ask them if they can wait.”

“Ok.”

“Right you have one minute to tell me who sent you, then I hand you over to the police.”

“Ok.  Ok.  A Mr Barnes rang me this morning telling me that he had a job for me.  I was to come here and make sure a Ianto Jones had an accident whilst he was having physio.”

“How much where you paid and where’s Jacqui?”

“She’s ok.  Mr Barnes rang her at home this morning asking her to go to another hospital, not sure which one though, as she was needed to cover there.  She was going to be sent straight home when they told her that her services were no longer needed.  She’d be told to take the rest of the day off as they’d got cover for her here.  She should be at home relaxing.”

“I’ll be checking and for your sake I hope you’re telling me the truth, because if I find anything has happened to her I won’t be responsible for my actions.  So come on then, how much were you being paid?”

“Mr Barnes said £2000 would be in my bank account by the end of the day.”

Owen looked at Jack who had gone to Ianto and put a loving arm around him.

“Jack, you got anything to ask?”

“Oh yeah.”  He went and stood face to face with Mark, his nose nearly touching the other mans.  “Who paid Barnes to get you to do this?”

“I don’t know, honest.  Barnes doesn’t tell me things like that.  I just do what I’m told, then get paid.”

“Right, how do we contact Barnes?”

“You don’t, he contacts me, on my mobile.  He’s going to check with me later to find out if he’s” and he pointed to Ianto “if he’s dead.”

Jack had had enough, he punched Mark in the stomach and was just about to do it again....

“JACK don’t, for me, please.  He’s not worth it.” Shouted Ianto.

Jack stopped himself and went back over to Ianto and helped him stand then held him tightly.  “I have an idea who’s behind this but I need more proof.  Mark....or whatever your name is.  Give me your phone, then when Mr Barnes rings I’ll tell him everything is done.”

“He’s not going to go for that.  He wants proof.”

“How were you going to do that?”

“Photographs,  how else?”

“Right, Owen, take our friend here out to the police, but first I want his phone.  Tell them everything that’s happened but not that I’m going to speak to Barnes.  Tell them I’ll go to the station and make a statement as soon as Ianto’s safely back on the ward.”

“What are you going to do Jack?”

“Give Barnes what he wants.  Proof about Ianto.  Look at the weights machine.”

Owen saw what Jack had seen.  The cable holding the weights had been partially cut through.  A couple more lifts and it would have snapped bringing the weights down onto Ianto and crushing him.

“Take him” Jack pointed at Mark “out to the police then come back and help me rig a picture.”

Owen dragged Mark to the police, told them everything that had happened and that Jack would give them a statement later, then he went to help Jack.

“Please enlighten me to what you hope to do to convince Barnes that Mark has succeeded.”

“I thought we could rig something to make it look like Yan’s had an accident.  We’ve been talking and he’s up for it.  We just need to find a way of making out he’s been crushed by the weights.”

“Ok, I have an idea, Ianto are you sure about this?”

“Yeah, I’m positive.”

“This is what we’ll do.”  Owen went on to explain that if Ianto could lie on the floor he could dismantle the machine with help from Jack, then they could place the weights around him, cover him up and if he closed his eyes whilst they took a photo, then maybe that would convince Barnes.

Ianto agreed, so for the next hour they rigged the accident.  When they were sure the picture they had looked as though Ianto was dead, Jack took him back to his ward.

“I’m sorry Jack.”

“Hey, it’s not your fault.  I think I know who’s behind this, but I have to get Barnes to own up.”

“You’re thinking it’s Hart aren’t you?”

“Yeah, I’m sorry to say.”

“Tell the police Jack please.  I don’t want to lose you.”

“Once I have proof then I’ll go to the police, till then we have to be careful.  I love you Yan and am not going to lose you to anyone.”  He leant down and kissed his young man he whispered.  “Just keep remembering what happened before physio, and I promise you we are going to have more of that.”

“I can’t wait Cariad.  Be careful, please I want you back tonight, telling me it’s all sorted.”

“I will Yan, I promise.  Now get some sleep, you’ve worked hard today.”  He smiled.

“Hard at some things Jack, but it’s only left me wanting more.”  Ianto smiled as Jack left him to go wait for Barnes’ call.
