Is it me or is this sheet lunacy- Time Warner rant

So I get this lovely little postcard in the mail from my cable company saying effective October 15 there will be a $3.95 rental charge for any Internet modem. Okay yeah that sucks, but what can I do, right? This is where the lunacy comes in

That sounds like a serious WTF! I've got bundled Internet and phone as well and like you said, it's one box with two wires sticking out of it. Charging a rental for one but not the other makes NO sense, at least to this technical neophyte. But at least they're not charging you a rental fee for each?

What I recall from living in New York is that, basically, Time Warner is the devil. Not that its counterpart in Philly, Comcast, is any better. They both charge a boatload of money and there are all kinds of crazy fees bundled in there that were nowhere in evidence when you singed up for that initial "package" deal. It got so bad we went with a smaller provider for awhile, but the quality of the service was so shoddy (Internet and phones going out frequently for NO apparent reason) we had to bite the bullet and go back. :/

Good for you for standing up and questioning it, even if it took you to the Twilight Zone.

And I just got off the phone with them and they weren't any more help than the twitter people. They should not be calling it a lease fee as much as an Internet tax. Oh but to charge tax they probably need some government approval. So I need to buy a second piece of equipment to avoid the lease charge.

I hung up on the lady. I so wish I had another option of a service provider right now.
