I might drop out of school and move back to Portland. I mean, I could make a decent living as a gas station cashier, couldn't I? I think i worked out that i actually made more a month ringing up late night beer runs than i do right now, but that's besides the point ( Read more... )

I'm all for you moving back to Portland if that is what makes you happiest, but think for a moment about the wonderful people you know in portland. How many of them did you know in your first year at L&C? How many of them became close to you after only a few months? You said it yourself, it takes a while to get to know you. I'm not saying meeting people is easy. Meeting new people seems to be the most difficult thing about moving away from portland, from the clans we formed at LC. It's not impossible, though it does take effort.

Ultimately you're going to do what makes you happiest, and if that's a phd or its pdx, they're each going to cost you something.

It has only been five months...

Ian, I have great faith in your ability to form close and lasting friendships. I think you underestimate yourself, and sometimes you underestimate other people.

All good things with time, friend. I wish you all the best!

There's two issues here:

1) Dropping out of grad school - while suffering my most recent bi-weekly bout of grad school doubt, I started asking all my fellow post-bachelor's what they would be doing if they weren't in grad school. Turns out EVERYONE fantasizes about a regular 9-to-5, how much money they'd make, how cool and easy it would be... Try it with your friends! It made me feel much better.

2) Moving to a new place is tough... I think you can always expect at least a year before you feel comfortable and make enough good friends that you can rely on. On the bright side, it can be a good period to introspect and be aware of the direction you want your life to go in, and take steps to direct it that way. Your recent prodigious blogging makes me think you're doing just that.
