Sinful Colors Candy Coated
I was so excited about this color I painted my
toes with it a week ago. As far as I can tell it's one of Sinful Colors' new lines for spring, though I'm going by not having seen it at Walmart before, and we all know how Walmart is with stocking new things ... Anyway, I was really excited to find this color, because as soon as I saw it I knew it was the exact same color aaas ...
The Deborah Lippmann
Girls collection Shoshanna! You'll remember
the entry where I was captivated by the color on Lena Dunham. Deborah Lippmann, though, as a rule for me is 1) waaaay too expensive, at $18 retail, 2) often duped immediately in a lot lower priced brand, like Revlon. I didn't expect to see this from Sinful Colors, but I'm glad they did! $2 versus $18 - that's like ... 500% savings? (I can't do math, I'm a librarian.) ... So obviously I don't have Shoshanna in front of me, and I will not be doing an in-hand (ha ha) comparison. But it sure as hell looks like the same color to me! Feel free to google swatches. Maybe it's not 100% exact, but believe me, I'm an artist, it's close enough.
What I like about Sinful Colors Candy Coated is that it's your essential cool lavender - it's closer to blue than purple, which seems like it would be a really weird clash with your skin tone, but the fact that it's lavender, actually a purple, makes it work strangely. I don't think I'd ever have seen its potential if I hadn't seen it on a person's real life nails, and that's what i love about this color - it's unexpected, bold, but cool and classic.
Sinful Colors has some great creams - I saw 3 different lavenders alone at Walgreens were I got this one, and they are really in touch not only with making the color itself a really versatile and chic hue, but tapping into the "hot colors" of the season. Not that I subscribe to the fact that actual colors go in and out of style, but it's nice to see a color elsewhere and be able to find it in nail polish.
Sinful Colors' formula this time was a little odd. I've been using
Nirvana for a long time, and it seemed pretty normal, but Candy Coated had a weird elasticky quality to its formula; it was kind of too thick, but at the same time it was REALLY smooth. I had to redo my entire foot the first time I used it because I found too much polish glommed on the brush, and I had to start with one veeery thin coat and let that dry a few minutes before adding another layer. In general it was a bit globby to apply, but not globby at all once it's on your nails - it just spread out like honey once it's off the brush. It had a really beautiful finish when dry, but unfortunately this brand you DO need a topcoat if you're not going to be standing still for 12 hours, because it does not hard-set really at all. But on the bright side, I've been wearing it for nearly 3 days and it hasn't chipped in the slightest, even without a base coat!
Review: The formula was a bit thick this time, but I've never had any polish end up with a smoother finish than Sinful Colors - you couldn't get bubbles, bumps, lumps or glumps in this if you tried! I love this color, it's a hip lavender and a super money-saving dupe for spring. A
... And as you may have noticed, my Untried Polish Challenge #7 is going to be a day late. Again. I'm sorry, but I like my cool lavender too much - and it's holding together too legendarily - to change it yet!
