Summary: Only about ten feet separated them, but it might as well be a hundred. A hunt takes a few unexpected, unwelcome twists and turns

Oh, boys. I really want Sam to accept that he's good because of what he does, and that whatever is in his blood (or not) isn't important. I hope Dean can convince him.
I really want Sam to accept that he's good because of what he does, and that whatever is in his blood (or not) isn't important. I hope Dean can convince him.
You already know I figure that Sam's not done worrying about his destiny just yet. *g* It'll be interesting to see just what lengths he goes to this year to save Dean, and if those lengths are questionable, in which case I expect much angst.
I enjoyed this fic from beginning to end -- a fantastic read. :)
It felt like selling his soul all over again, but what the hell else could he do? He was a dead man anyway -- here, or eleven months from now.
I can truly imagine Dean making that offer to Anna. After all, what would he have to lose? And he'd do anything and everything if it meant saving Sam.
Bobby huffed. “What you need is to get that damned fool head of yours looked at. You’re brain-damaged enough as it is. Don’t wanna take any chances and make it worse.”
I loved that line! ;D Bobby's not afraid to use a little tough love on the boys, especially Dean. It's one of things I adore most about the guy.
He didn’t have room for shadows in his memories of Mom, grabbed onto the easiest explanation like a life preserver. That's such a perfect statement. I think if/when Dean learns about his mom's connection to the Demon, he won't quite be able to accept it. In Dean's mind, Mary's an angel, a saint, and there's no way he's going to allow anything bad to cast a shadow

Glad you liked this! :) And you picked out one of my favorite lines when you mentioned Bobby's brain-damaged quote. *g* You're right, he really isn't afraid to use tough love. I do so enjoy all his gruff affection.
I think if/when Dean learns about his mom's connection to the Demon, he won't quite be able to accept it.
I agree. It's going to be hard for him to believe that the connection could be anything bad. He'll want to believe that she knew him as a good (innocent) person knows an enemy, and nothing more.
Thanks much for the lovely feedback, and especially for pointing out your favorite lines. I always enjoy seeing what stands out for a reader. :)
Ha ha! I come home from the fangirl weekend and am greeted by lovely, Winchestery treats from YOU! Huzzah!
Now would be an awesome time to come up with an escape plan.
AWESOME Dean voice throughout. Just the perfect balance of cocky and freaked and cool-headed and oh, crap Sam, capped off with a generous helping of Bobby being made of knife-throwing awesome.
Loved the idea that Sam TASTES different now. So creepy and disturbing. Also really good to see him come clean to Dean about what the Demon told him.
Yay, I'm glad you liked this! :) So good to hear you thought my Dean voice worked. I tend to obsess about getting voices right, often worrying over individual word choices, so that kind of feedback makes me happy. :)

*g* Part of me really wanted to have the boys get themselves out of that fix, but there really wasn't much hope for escape, given the situation, and I adore Bobby, so ...

Good to hear you found it creepy. I was rather excited about that idea. In my head, that scene was much more graphic, and I actually considered having her drain him awhile longer, but for various reasons I went with her just having a little taste.
Also really good to see him come clean to Dean about what the Demon told him.I'm wondering when that'll happen in season three. I really don't want Dean finding out any other way than from Sam, but ... I suppose it's possible he finds out on his own, or

I love this take on Sam post-AHBL2. I'm not a real fan of Sam not being Sam or Sam being evil, so this deals with his killing Jake in a somewhat believable way. And poor Sam--still afraid he's evil. But at least he finally confessed it all to Dean.
I'm glad you liked this so much. :) Great to hear you think it's a realistic portrayal of Sam post-AHBL2. I'm really interested to see what Kripke does with Sam next year. I don't think we've seen the last of Sam angsting over who/what he is. And I can't blame him. Coming back from the dead, what happened with Jake, what the demon told him during the dream ... it's a lot of heavy stuff for Sam to deal with.
And he had a lovely head wound :)
*g* Had to beat him up a little bit for sunrize83.
I really enjoyed this, and the way the boys took care of each other, physically and emotionally. Funnily enough, this is the first fic I've read where Sam tells Dean what the demon showed him, and I like the way you make it so now the boys each have a task focused on the other. Aw, boys.
And there was some awesome Bobby action to boot. That's always fun. *g*
I think I've told you this before, but I do so love your icon. *pets doggie*

Really? Cool! When I wrote this, I wasn't sure how many people had written Dean finding out all the scary details. Actually, I didn't originally plan on that reveal taking place in this story. But I knew that what the demon showed Sam would be a large reason why Sam would be so worried, and it would up the angst factor if Sam actually 'fessed up to Dean. And I love me some angst. *g*

That wound up being one of my favorite parts of the story, so it's cool having you point it out. I figure that for Dean, it's now not only a matter of keeping Sam physically well during the next year, but emotionally well, too. Dean doesn't want to leave an angst-ridden Sam behind, so he'll do what he can to make Sam as OK as possible before the deal is up.

Hey, by all means, tell me twice. Who doesn't like hearing a compliment more than once? *g* He was only going to be my default for a little while, but he turned out to be quite the lady killer, so he stayed.
Really? Cool! When I wrote this, I wasn't sure how many people had written Dean finding out all the scary details.
Yup. Hopefully Sam won't keep it to himself for long in season 3, just for his own sake, 'cause like you showed here, you know he's going to be mulling it over that when he's not trying to break the deal. (Can you imagine what the fic would have been like this summer if Dean hadn't told/Sam hadn't figured out that Dean sold his soul? I can only imagine the flood. *g*)
I figure that for Dean, it's now not only a matter of keeping Sam physically well during the next year, but emotionally well, too.Yeah, I was thinking also that Dean here seems so glad to have a specific way to help Sam emotionally too. He'd probably like to tell Sam not to

Agreed. Sam needs emotional support on this one.

*g* Huge, massive flood. I confess I thought Kripke was going to do just that, leave Sam in the dark on the whole thing. Actually, I thought it would be an interesting twist. But I really like that Sam knows -- I'd rather not have Dean keep another Big Secret from Sam -- and how it set up such a juicy arc for season three.
He'd probably like to tell Sam not to wear himself out trying to look for a solution, but knows that Sam won't listen and that he himself would never stop looking if he were in Sam's position as well.
