I imagine he did it as a joke at first.

Mary: "Maybe if you read to him, he'll stop kicking me."

John: "Well, if I'm gonna read, it might as well be something good. Something educational." *grabs encyclopedia and finds Chevrolet entry*

Mary: *rolls eyes*

But then John started reading, and Dean settled down, and Mary was so, so glad. *g*
